Hello
I will need to return to work for 3 days per week after 8weeks post delivery. Friends are only giving their children 1 bottle per day. I admit that I have a BFing book on my list to get to that might answer some of my questions but my thinking is that I will have to get our son used to the bottle much sooner and he will need to do way more than 1 bottle per day while I am gone.
How did others make this transition? I don't want to bottle feed too soon and him then have difficulty with the breast
Re: Bottle feed transition for returning to work
I had problems with DS's latch (well, we had problems) for a a month and then a few weeks later I had to go back to work, so I was worried this would be a huge problem. But it wasn't.
We did a bottle or two a day of freshly pumped milk the week before I went back to work. DH had to give it to him, though, because he would NOT take a bottle from me. It was like I was trying to kill him.
We had no issues with nipple confusion and no more latching problems because of bottle feeding.
I waited till around 3-4 weeks to introduce the bottle with both kids. Early enough that they were still open to something other than the breast, late enough to reduce the chance of nipple confusion.
With DD, I was good about giving her one bottle every night during my leave. With DS... well... not so much. He gets a bottle once a week or so. Maybe. Anyway, he's never had any issues taking the bottle and so I don't anticipate any problems when I return to work.
Your DS will likely need to take more than 1 bottle per day when you're gone, but that's not a big deal. Just make sure he knows what a bottle is before you return to work, and you'll be fine. I also don't think you need to introduce the bottle any earlier. Either a baby takes a bottle or s/he doesn't. It's not like you have to introduce the bottle earlier because he'll be taking more bottles than the child of a SAHM.
