In your experience, did you need newborn diapers when your baby was born or did you go straight to size 1? If I buy both sizes, any recs on how many of each to get before baby is born?
I would start with size 1. If they are a tad bit big that's okay. When you start getting blow outs it's because you need to move up a size anyway. You'd rather avoid those if you could, right?

I was at babies r us and I was told that the difference was that the newborn diapers have room for the umbilical cord and the size ones do not.
I haven't seen one or inspected it myself but that made sense to me. She said that one package of the newborns should be good enough after that I can switch to size one.
Depends on the baby's size. DS was 8lbs, and we could use either at first, but quickly moved to size 1. It's true some NB diapers have the umb. cord cutout, but you can just fold down the top of size 1's.

It really depends on how big your baby is. My DD was 9lbs and we used newborns for about a week. I used CDs after that, but did bump to size 1s when we were out. I would imagine size 1s would be huge on a 5 or 6lb baby.
I had a big baby and even he couldn't use the size 1 ones right away without leaking everywhere. We used maybe 2 packs of Newborns and that was all then we were in size ones. I liked the Huggies the best because they are arched in the front for the cord.
We bought all size 1s when we were buying ahead and DH ended up needing to run out our first night home to get more newborns.
The hospital gave us a pack of Pampers newborns and Pampers size 1s- we went through the newborn ones and I tried to put her in a size 1 but I would have had to twist the tabs around her back to get them to fit, and they went up to her chest!
However, about 11 days later, she was in size 1s because she kept pooping up the back of the nb ones. So don't stock up on too many!
With diapers, its kind of a wait and see. If you do end up buying a bunch, save receipts and don't open them until you need them. (Also, its best to avoid the huge boxes of the early sizes because you just don't know how many you're going to need)

We used NB diapers for almost a month with Gav.
