Am I being paranoid? (low fluid related)

Hi ladies.  I've popped on here a few times to ask questions about my low fluid (6 @ 20w, 9.71 @ 21w, 9.78 @ 22w).  I met with my regular doctor after my first two AFIs, and then another doctor in the practice (who I know and respect) after the third.  My doctor wants me drinking tons of water, trying to "take it easy" (not on bedrest), and eliminating all caffeine from my diet.  When I met with the other doctor, she told me that basically, my doctor is more conservative than she is, and that while my numbers are lower than they'd like to see, she's not really concerned.  She encouraged me to continue drinking water, but said she didn't think I needed another AFI for a month.  She said she'd let my doctor know, and have her change my appointment if she wanted to see me sooner.  I was okay with this, but then started getting paranoid yesterday.  I called the nurse to ask her to re-check with my doctor about coming in next week (24.5 w--about 2 weeks since my last AFI) for another one.

So here's the deal...I'm very close to one of the other docs in the practice (I keep her daughter every day, we live 2 blocks apart, our DHs were roommates in college, etc), and know all of the docs on a more personal/social level.  My friend the doc isn't too worried about my levels (as long as they stay consistent), and obviously doc 2 isn't too worried.  I still feel like I like that my doctor is more conservative than them, though, and from what I've seen on here from some of you with low fluid, it doesn't even seem like she's that conservative!

So would you want another AFI next week if you were me?  Where would you be on the "concerned spectrum"?

Sorry this got so long...and thanks for any feedback/insight!!

  • ACOG says that the low-fluid thing is getting too much press and that as long as your level is above a 5 you are safe. I would always feel more comfortable with their opinion over any one doctor (since ACOG is the one who does the research.) With two second opinions, I'd feel comfortable.

  • I wouldn't be opposed to frequent fluid checks. I have them weekly and you get to see the baby!

Oh, wow, this is really good to know.  Thanks!

  • ACOG does not do the research.  They just collaborate on research and come up with an opinion.  Technically speaking any AFI above 5 cm (or a deepest vertical pocket of greater than 2 cm) is not oligohydramnios.  I just looked up percentiles for AFI and at 22 weeks you were hovering right above the 5th percentile.  It's easy to see how some docs would be worried and others not as much.l

So go with whichever doctor's guidance you feel more comfortable with.  :)  And hydrate hydrate hydrate!!

  • my levels have been between 11-12 and i still get AFI every tuesday. i would still want an AFI every week no matter what. im just an extremly paranoid person tho.

    and keep drinking that water!!!

  • I am still going weekly for AFI.  For the past 2 weeks they have stayed at 10.   My doc actually went ahead and scheduled a month of appointments for me.

  • I would want to get checked every week.

I just had a low fluid u/s - it was at 15 last week and was 8 on a first read and then 10.2 when they double-checked it yesterday.

My doctor didn't seem concerned and said the same thing - take it easy and drink lots of water.  I've kind of put myself on bedrest, becasue there's no way to take it easy with two toddlers!

At any rate, I'm nervous until the next appointment on Monday, even though my OB said those numbers are an okay range and not to worry.

It probably is nothing or just the heat or whatever, but, still, what can it hurt to check?
