Nuchal Translucency Test?

I know what it's for, but is it necessary?! I'm only 25 & DH  & I both do not have a family history of down syndrome or any other defects.

Re: Nuchal Translucency Test?

  • We didn't do any of the screening tests with DD. It's only "necessary" if you might terminate or want to be prepared in case something comes back abnormal.

Agreed. I was debating doing the NT tests but they asked me "would you terminate the pregnancy if something was wrong" i said no and they said ok then there is no need. We didn't get it done

  • Just so you guys know down syndrome is not really hereditary. I looked into this because my aunt and two cousins have DS. I was very concerned but It would make no difference to me either way but I would want to be prepared. But anyways its something small like 1% of a certain kind of DS is hereditary the other 98.999 % ( the common form) is all genetics/age/health and so on! My mom doesn't think I should get it done because she feels like its a slap in my aunts face but like I told her its my child and i just want to be prepared either way. I wouldn't love the child any less!!!
  • you may laugh but what does DH and DD stand for?
  • Not necessary and it's not a definitive test either.  It just screens and provides an indication of the odds of something being abnormal.  An abnormal reading on the NT test in and of itself doesn't tell you anything for sure.  (Neither does a normal for that matter.)

That being said, we had the NT scan the first time around and will do it again this time.

While we would not terminate a pregnancy over any testing or screening results, if we were to have a special needs child, we would like to be able to have as much time as possible to plan for special medical care during L&D and any special care that may be needed after our LO is born.

ETA: Also the PP is correct - Downs (and the other trisomy disorders for that matter) are more often than not - not inherited.  They are usually random disorders that occur with the union of a particular sperm and egg.  Family history rarely plays into this equation.

  • I agree with what everyone else is saying, but I do want to specifically point out that just because you don't have major risk factors and it may not be 'necessary' my DH and I have agreed that it would be a good idea to be as prepared as possible.

When I tell people I'm getting the NT scan, and that I'm paying out of pocket for it because my doctor doesn't think it's necessary they usually respond, "Oh, well we didn't get that because we wouldn't kill our baby."

Dude, I'm not going to kill my baby either.  I just want a plan in place, and I want to do as much research as I can beforehand.

    Please don't make assumptions.

  • LOL!!! I asked the same question when I first started chatting. DD & DH stand for Dear Daughter & Dear Husband. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, there's a "bump board glossary" to explain all of the confusing lingo   :-)

  • It's a personal choice.  Talk to your doctor at your first appt to gather more info and his/her opinion.  Ultimately, you decide.

I did for my first pregnancy and for my recent pregnancy as well which is how it was determined our baby had Trisomy 18 and would likely not survive a year. PP are right - Down's Syndrome and the Trisomy disorders are not hereditary and can happen to anyone. I will definitely get the NT scan in my next pregnancy as well.

Are you serious? Some people are so retarded... Excuse the poorly place pun but seriously?! So RUDE to assume something like that. We also just wanted to be prepared. We lost our son to something that would have been caught on the NT scan and SHOULD (thanks kaiser) have been caught on the Anatomy scan... Its completely up to you I just think if you CAN know why not know?

  • I went back and forth. Although I do not believe I would terminate (I want to say I would never terminate, but I have never been in the situation), I wanted to be prepared if something went wrong.

I ultimately decided not to go through with the NT scan, because I would definitely not want to go through with any of the follow-up tests, because of the potential risks.

It is a very personal decision. Good luck!

  • Personally, we wouldn't terminate, but there is something to be said for being prepared, and not getting a big surprise at the time of delivery.  Also, it's another great chance to see your baby on the scan, and see how he's growing.  He's not just a bean anymore.  Now he looks like a little person... or she.

:-)  Some people accept them for the extra scan.  My insurance covers 3 scans, so we got the 7 week scan, we'll have the NT, and the 20 week scan.

  • one thing i have learned thru pregnancies is never say never.  We terminated in the 2nd tri with our 1st IVF pregnancy when we went to the NT scan i had no amniotic fluid and the baby didnt develop kidneys (potters sequence). I had no warning that there was anything wrong.   Its not heridtary, theres no known reason why it happens its extremely rare.  But if we didnt do these tests we would not have known till later in the pregnancy.  When the baby more than likely would have died in utero.

Thank God my DS was born perfectly healthy and this pregnancy is going text book.  We have done all the necessary testing and wanted to be prepared regardless.

Its not always about Downs Syndrome, its T-18 and all other abnormalities.

  • We are actually having the test done on Wednesday 6/9.  No matter what the outcome is, we would never terminate our little peanut.  My cousin had the test done last year, and it is the most amazing sono picture ever!!!  So we figured, the most invasive it is, is a little finger stick and some great pics for the baby book!  Good luck with whatever you decide!
