Night time routine if you're away...?

So my DD has been STTN for over a month now and we're thrilled.  Every night we try to stick really close with our routine of bath, swaddle, bottle, and bed by 8.  For those of you that have gotten down a good routine, do you try to be home every night so you can follow it?  What do you do when your at a friends/relatives house?

I want my DD to be flexable...but I also don't want to mess up what we have going on.

Re: Night time routine if you're away...?

  • Honestly, when we've traveled to other people's houses for the weekend, DS will not STTN there. It takes him a few nights after we get home to go back to his regular schedule. No advice, but I would try to stick to the timing/schedule as closely as possible. Just know that it might not work somewhere else. GL.

  • We used to my parent house every weekend before starting a routine. Of course she didn't sleep well but she didn't have a routine either. Now that we have a routine and this weekend might be the first that we stay the night at my parents... I'm nervous too. I don't think it will be a problem because she doesn't STTN and I think she is in her wakeful period. I don't want to mess things up either but in two weekends we'll be in Michigan for the weekend. I don't have much advice either.

My DD has been great in her ability to be flexible.  We still try to stick to a routine, but if we'er out (at a friends for dinner or something or even away from home for the night), we have to modify it of course.

At home we do bath, pjs, swaddle, bottle, rock, bed.

When we're out, if we're going to be there overnight I will have brought the tub to do her bath so I do bath, pjs, swaddle, bottle, rock, bed....(sometimes the rocking is just me sitting in a stationary chair and rocking my body, sometimes bed is pack n play).  If we're just out somewhere for a few hours, I usually bring the bouncy seat or her travel swing (it folds up and goes in the car fairly easily).  And I'll do pjs, swaddle, bottle and then swing.  She falls right to sleep.

  • This is one of my struggles as well.

I want to be a bit flexible, but her routine works so well. Once we just brought her pjs to our friend's house, and when we left we made sure we could get home right before DD needed to eat. That worked out fine.
