Encouraging a 15mo to walk

DD took her first steps the night before her first birthday walking in between DH and I on the floor.  About the same time she started to cruise along all the furniture, walls, etc.  She pulls herself up on about anything now and is climbing up onto foot stools, into bathroom/kitchen drawers etc.  She is practically running with her push toy and picks it up off the ground to turn it in a new direction.  Problem: She rarely stands independantly and does not walk on her own unless DH and I sit down on the floor and coax her to walk back and forth between us.  She can stand and walk very well at those times, she just won't do it on her own.

I know all kids go at thier own pace, but my stomach is getting bigger by the day and with it being so hot outside it comletely wears me out carrying her everywhere we go.

Are there any other activities I can be doing to get her to walk on her own?  We don't have our 15mo appt with the pedi till the 16th.  TIA

Re: Encouraging a 15mo to walk

  • My DD is in PT and they have her walk with those big exercise balls.  It helps with their balance and confidence and they will eventually chase the ball rather than leaning on it (or so I'm told).  I feel you on being preg with a non walker

  • DD is pretty much in the same place as your DD, except she has never taken a step on her own. She can all out run with her push toy and will walk holding my hand (even with just one hand, walking side by side) but rarely stands independently. A few of her friends at daycare (all a few months younger) just started walking, so I'm hoping that will help motivate her a bit.

  • It sounds like she just needs more confidence. I would just keep doing what you are doing and encourage her. Maybe don't pick her up as much. Just hold her hand. Give her stuff to "hold" and have her walk to you so it seems to her she is holding on. Good luck! I'm sure she'll do great.

  • MY LO was the same as yours. He was walking with a push toy, pulling up and cruising for MONTHS before he even tooks his first step and it was a month or two after that he walked independently (that was at about 15mos). Just keep doing what you're doing and make her walk everywhere that she can safely on her own. I was in the habit of just picking up DS to go get his diaper changed or from the car to the library, etc. but I really started encouraging him to walk holding my hand. It took freaking FOREVER to get anywhere but I think that helped.
