Pre-School and Daycare

My kid is going to be the only 5 yo in diapers.

I can not get my child to sit on the potty.  She is wearing panties today, since we are doing the 3-day PT.  I have cleaned two spots up already.  Any ideas or suggestions?

  • Is today the first day?  I don't really have any suggestions, but I cleaned up a lot of messes the first day and then it was like he got it by day 2.  Good luck!

  • This is the first day for this round.  This is the 3rd time we have tried.  She is not a fan of the potty.

Ditto.  The first day, I was up to my ears in pee and poop!  By the second day, he started to get it. :)  Hang in there!

The thing that helped us the most, was having a portable potty and keeping it in the room he stayed the most.

  • We tried twice...she will get it eventually.  I teach 8th grade and have never had a student in diapers!! Stick out tongue
  • How old is she?  DD used the potty sometimes but wasn't really that interested.  2 days after her 3rd birthday she said she didn't want to wear pull ups anymore and has only had a couple accidents since April.

She will be 3 in Aug.  She has to be 100% PTed for pre-school in Aug.  I wish I could wait for her 3rd B-day, but we don't have that option.

Thank goodness she won't be alone.  Maybe we should move to the same city, that way they won't be alone in K.

  • My DS will probably be right there with you. He refuses to go on the potty, he'll literally hold it until I get sick of sitting there with him then as soon as I pull up the undies he pees. Wonderful. I've given up until after his birthday.
  • My DS would not pee on the potty until about a month after his 3rd birthday.  He could hold it, he could tell me when he had to go, but he would not let the pee out on the potty.

Like MysteriousPreschooler, he has an August birthday, and needed to be PT by the time he started school in early September.  When school rolled around, he was as NOT PT as it was possible to be!

I just sent him to school in pull ups, told him to hold it while he was at school, and put a diaper on him at home.  He never peed at school.  About a month after the school year, he was willing to pee on the potty, and he was potty trained in a day.  FWIW, most preschools have licensing that says the teachers cannot change diapers.  That doesn't mean that your child can't wear a pull up -- it just means that if there's an accident, they'll call you to come deal with it.  In fact, my preschool says that if a child is still in a pull up, and he/she pees, but it stays in the pull up, they don't care.  If the child poops, they'll call the parents to come change the child, but the child can return to the classroom afterwards.  It's no biggie!

  • Honestly it will happen when she is ready and nothing you do will get her to do it faster.  Kids have 110% control over when they become potty trained.  You are providing her the tools, showing her what to do and that is about all you can do.  I have found with my kids (one potty trained at 2 years 9 months and the other is 2 years 3 months and sort of training now) that if I push it, they back up and stop being interested.  What we did was at certain set times of the time and whenever we had to change a diaper, we asked if they wanted to use the potty (this is what they do at daycare so we used the same method), if they said yes - off we went - made a huge deal about sitting on it - have a fun book or two to read, if they actually pee or poop - sing and dance and really make a big deal, if no, than move on and that is that. My older DD pretty much went from diapers to undies and maybe an accident a week in 3 weeks and this included naps and nighttime.  My 2 year old has days where she is really interested and days where she could care less.  She always tells me when she is going but just doesn't always want to use the potty.  She is now in the preschool 1 room at daycare and half the kids are trained and half are in training so I know with all of that going on, she is going to have more of an interest, at least at school.  She just started the room yesterday and already was way more excited about since her friends were all doing it.
