Schedule and a Sleeping Question

Currently we feed the boys every 2-4 hours...we feed them whenever one wakes within the time frame or we wake them both up at 4 hours.  We let them sleep as long as they want at night but if one wakes up we feed the other.

So my question is....is this how you put twins on a schedule?  They don't always want to eat at the same time so to me we are not on a schedule.  What did you do?  I am afraid that if we feed every 3 hours during the day they won't ever sleep longer...what do you think or what was your experience.

I am going back to work next week so I just want to make sure we are doing the best we can at that time.  Thanks.

Re: Schedule and a Sleeping Question

  • That is basically how we did it. I don't think that feeding them every 3 hours during the day will impact night sleep.  We did that for both of ours and DD is an excellent sleeper while DS - not so much... I think it more depends on the baby.

The hardest thing when they were eating so often at your LOs age was trying to get them to eat at the same time for the 1st AM feeding - if we managed that the rest of the day seemed to go better.  Try holding one off if the other is still sleeping - of course if they are hungry feed them and just try to adjust the next feedings.

    GL - scheduling is hard.

  • We woke which ever one needed to be when we were feeding. We fed every 3 hours. We also dream fed at night. They didn't eat the same amount, but they were always fed at the same time. Don't expect your kids to need the same amount of sleep. One may need less sleep during the 24 hour period than the other. My DD sleeps more than my DS by an hour to an hour and half each 24 hour cycle. I have a good book referenced in my blog that really helped us out and made a lot of sense. GL!
  • At that age, we did the opposite. During the day when one got hungry, we'd feed both but at night We let them sleep. The first time we did this it was a little by accident because When James woke up to eat, I tried to feed Eli too, but he just wouldn't wake up to eat and didn't eat very much. I found that night that Eli could do  6 hour stretch so I figured we'd let them sleep. Also until then I had been BFing them but we switched and had DH give a bottle of pumped milk in the night. Worked well for us and it made it easier for the boys to stretch out their sleep on their own. During the day we started would feed them every 4 hours, but weren't strict about that and if they were hungry before 4 hours we'd feed them. But generally at the same time during the day.

  • We did the same thing as you for the first few months.  If one baby woke at night to eat, we woke the other.  It took a few trial runs, but eventually when the boys were around 3 months old or so, we began letting them sleep and whoever woke got fed.  We let his brother sleep until he woke (if at all) to be fed.  Then I would wake them both around 7 am for a feeding and feed them every 3 - 4 hours throughout the day.  Good luck :)
