Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Charging a friend for childcare ??

My friend wants me to watch her 2 month old son 1 or 2 days a week for about 8 hours per day. Daycare around here for one full day is $83 and 2 full days is $166. I don't want to charge her that much...but I want to make it worth my time since having two babies here will be a challenge. What would you charge per 8 hour day?

Re: Charging a friend for childcare ??

  • $50-$75.

I know you don't want to charge her much, but honestly you're doing her a favor by watching her kid only a few days/week.  She probably would not be able to find someplace else that allows just one or two days of care.

  • Wow--that's a tough situation, as long as you want to stay friends with herHuh?

I'm not sure I would be okay with doing that with a friend.

  • Wow, that is a lot of money to me!  I would charge $40 here in VT, but looks like at $50-60 she would be getting a steal.  I only pay my sitter $35 (which is sadly like nothing an hour, but that seems to be the going rate here).

  • i must be sleepier than I thought, I thought your post said Amazing Fried Chicken?

    But regarding your real question...

Yes I would charge and she should expect to pay.  I think 50 bucks a day is reasonable.  Make sure you have this conversation soon!

  • One of my parents ( I am a teacher) is watching DS for the half of day. So, I understand that it can be touchy. I pay her 25 for 8-11:45. I pay her 50 if I need her for the entire day.
  • I would think $50.00 a day would be reasonable...

She isn't expecting you to do it for nothing is she??

  • $50-$60/day

But I would NOT do that for a friend if I wanted to stay friends.

  • Why would it be a bad idea if we wanted to "stay" friends? I am just curious if I am not thinking something though. She said she will pay me and originally said $50 bucks or so. Is it a money thing or something else?
  • I can see her abusing the amount of time the baby is there, not paying you, not picking baby up on time, etc. Just wouldn't do it.
  • Ah...yes I didn't really think of that. Things to consider I guess. Thanks.
