Babies: 0 - 3 Months

x/p from AP, so frustrated with tummy time!

She just won't do it.  I won't let her cry, i just won't.  Because if i do, then i cry and it breaks my heart.  I don't want her to associate evil tummy time with me, i just can't do it.

this is what i've tried:

tummy time on my chest

tummy time on a boppy or prop up pillow

tummy time just on the floor

she screams and won't even lift up her head

the doctor doesn't seem to be too concerned but she's not the one dealing with it.  If babies roll from  stomach to back, how will she ever learn to roll?  she LOVES being on her back and kicking away, it makes her so happy!

the one thing i do to try to strenghen her neck is hold her in a sitting position and her head kind of bobbles while i support it

has anyone else had a baby like this and can you offer me any advice?

  • Honestly, do it a few times a day so she's not crying for 5 minutes straight. It gets much easier as they get older. My DS hated tummy time up until about 4 months old. Now if he's laid on his back, he rolls to his tummy so he can try to crawl. It will get easier. Just stick with it.

If you're really desperate and want to try something slightly controversial, I'd throw LO in front of the TV. I used to do that because the tv would get his attention. As long as you do it for just a few minutes and don't throw LO in front of the tv for an hour, I don't see a huge problem with a little tv time.

    thanks

i wouldn't have a problem with the TV but it's up kinda high so i don't think that would work

i will keep trying and try not to get too frustrated

  • when you put her on you tummy to tummy have you tried just continually patting her?  That usually puts DD to sleep on me, and even if she is sleeping, her muscles are still getting their tummy time.
  • My son hated tummy time so I never did it.  Never.  And he learned to roll at exactly the target age.  First from back to tummy then a few weeks later from tummy to back. Don't get yourself so upset, she will be just fine. I don't think tummy time even existed more than ten years ago and babies have been holding their heads up and rolling for millions of years.

actually no...rubbing but not patting....i will try thanks
  • My DD was the same way - don't worry about it and don't force it.  She rolled from back to belly first because she didn't like being on her belly and learned really quick how to get off of her belly after that.  We never had tummy time for longer than 20 seconds before at least 4 months old and my DD is perfectly fine.
  • Elena also hates tummy time, but i found that if I don't pick her up, she stops crying after 5 minutes or so. It's so tough to hear her crying but I've learn to just wait a little bit.

The only problem is that sometimes she falls sleep after the crying, so there's no exercising at all.
