Trying to Get Pregnant

NTTCR: Dumb crock pot question

I want to make pot roast in my slow cooker. All the recipes I see are for 8 hours on low. Can I assume that 4 hours on high will do the same, or is it the low/slow that makes it so delicious?

Re: NTTCR: Dumb crock pot question

  • I would not assume that 4 hours on high will work, especially for a pot roast.  Personally, I'd stick with the low and slow.

  • I've had issues with my pot roast turning out tough if I try to speed it along on high. The low and slow method is what makes it fall apart and be super tender. If you don't mind a little more toughness, then I say go for it.

It could just be that my crockpot's "high" is too hot. Yours may not be.

This! I would just stick with the low and slow to get really tender fall apart roast. MMM now I want roast!

  • I'm making a crockpot meal tonight as well.  The low/slow is definitely the best way to go- but high in half the time (depending on the cut of meat) will definitely get the job done and still be yummy!  GL!

  • Note:  Just keep a little extra liquid in to help things along and keep the "high" from getting too hot.

    Same here.

How big is said roast? That makes a big difference.

Maaaaybe 2 lbs. Most recipes I see for 8 hours are 5+ lbs.

(I am just desperate for roast tonight and it is almost 4...I don't want to eat at midnight!)

  • add more liquid to the bottom.. crank it up for a couple hours and then lower it..  mine are typically done earlier than 8 hours anyway.. just make sure to check the temp of the meat before you eat!

  • Update: A kitchen crisis

No roast tonight. DH went to make a PB sandwich and our cabinets are overcome with ants. We had to clear everything out, and we have no counter space now. Pizza night!
