Babies: 3 - 6 Months

What are your thoughts on walkers?

MIL wants to buy one for DD.  We've never really wanted one, so we've not done any research.  Do you have one? If so, which one and why? If you're opposed, why?

Thanks!

Re: What are your thoughts on walkers?

  • I don't have one personally, but my DS plays with one occasionally at my SIL's. He loves it. I don't have a problem with anything-jumpers, exersaucers, walkers, etc. Everything in moderation.

We have a hand-me-down BabyTrend one that we currently just use in out bathroom to put him in as we get his bath ready.  He loves it and can scoot backwards only, so we have to keep moving him forward so he can scoot again!  I think most of the freakouts were because people used them by stairwells, and DUH the baby fell down the stairs.  That's what gates are for!

  • We use ours when I need to cook, go to the bathroom etc. He LOVES it.Torani is right most of the reasons people frown on walkers and they were banned for more stationary play is because babies were falling down stairs.Indifferent You have to be some kinda genius to let your baby play in a moving toy next to stairs lol.

Yeah, if you research them you'll find a lot of junk about how they're unsafe, but it's because people stick their baby in there and walk away, providing little to no supervision.  Unless you're going to use it as a babysitter, they're safe.

  • We're not going to use one because I don't think they're very good for correct development. I also limit (as in 5-15 min every week or so) Bumbo time and don't have any other "containers". I throw a blanket or play gym on the floor, set Cora on her tummy (for 3.4 seconds until she rolls over and over) and she'll play and play.
  • As long as they are used with supervision, I don't have a problem with them. I don't have one because I had bought a jumperoo and MIL bought us an exersaucer so I think we're set.

    Everything in moderation.

  • We don't have one due to space constraints but I will likely pick up a very cheap one from Walmart once I move us to a new and bigger apartment. I know LO will like it because the child is so dang nosy. I think they are fine to use so long as you are not ignoring your child once you set them in the walker.
