Maternity Leave Question

Because my job has less than 75 employees they do not offer maternity leave, im going to  have to go on short term disablity....does anyone know how that works... i was told 4 weeks prior to EDD and 6 after... im not sure.. that seems like alot...and I'd rather take maybe two weeks before and 8 weeks after.... although my job does include a lot of heavy lifting (2 year olds).... idk hopefully one of you ladies can help clarify before i go talk to my boss. TIA

Re: Maternity Leave Question

  • You for sure want to check and see what your state requires employers to provide. It really varies from state to state.  For my employer, the short term disability is managed by MetLife.  That would be the main contact person for me to get my questions answered.

In my experience, you get up to a certain amount of time paid at 100% of your wages (time depends on years of service with company) then it goes to 60% of wages after that time.  During that time, you have to provide medical documentation for the time you are out.  Like I said, however, each employer and plan is different!!

    Good luck!

  • it depends on your company.  Mine offers nothing prior to birth, 2 weeks at 100% pay, then 50% pay up til when my MW says I am ready to go back to work (typically an additional 4 weeks).
  • Agree with PP.  It totally depends on your short term disability carrier and what your company has through them.  Every company is different, and it's really important to call your HR and the STD carrier.

We have to use PTO (paid time off) for the first week.  Each week after that we get 100% for every year we've worked at the company.  Then additional weeks are paid at 66% by STD and we can supplement with PTO to make it to 100%.  We can use STD up to 6 weeks PP for vaginal and 8 weeks for c-section.  I am on bedrest now, and I can use a total of 6 months of STD for my pregnancy.  What is also important to know is if you are responsible for your benefits while on STD.  We have to personally cover our benefits while on STD; I am writing a check to my employer every 2 weeks.

HTH.  Call soon so you can be prepared!!

  • depends on the company, but you should follow FMLA and take up to 12 weeks off and keep your job.

I get STD because of FMLA.  6 weeks for vaginal birth, and 8 weeks for c-section.

After that I can use vacation up to 12 weeks, and keep the position I am in.

If I do not have that much vacation, then I can take leave, unpaid up to the 12 weeks.  I just have to pre-pay my insurance right beforehand.

With DS I took my 8 weeks, and that was all.  This time I come back around Dec 14, and I already had the 19-1 off.  So I am working all the holidays between now and then and that allows me to be off, from around Oct 14-Dec 29th.  Well worth it!!

  • thanks guys... ill be calling on tuesday
  • As others have said, I would ask. It various from place to place.

I will get nothing before and 6 week for a natural birth or 8 weeks for a c-section. Those will be at only 66.3% pay.

  • I will be on STD too, I know that I have to take all my days off before that kicks in and I only get paid 2/3! Depending on birth I get 6-8 weeks.off.

This is me too. I have to take everything I have available first then STD.
