Washing a crocheted blanket?

I have a knitted/crocheted yarn baby blanket and have no idea how to wash it without ruining it. There's no tag with care instructions. I know not to put it in the dryer, but what about the washer? Is cold water good enough? Thoughts?

Re: Washing a crocheted blanket?

  • put it inside a lingerie wash bag and use cold water and woolite. Lay flat to dry. Do not hand it.

I'd hand wash, if you want to 'risk' it then I'd do it alone in cold water on delicate and then air dry.

  • Is it Lacy or a tighter weave? Cotton or acrylic (you should be able to feel the difference.) Either way, wash it on gentle with whatever soap and softner you normally use. If it is Acrylic, you could tumble dry on low for a few minutes until it's damp, then lay flat to finish drying. Cotton I would just lay flat.

Why not hand wash?  That's what people who have knit me blankets say to do, I don't know what is right though!

  • Thanks ladies. It's lacy and made of cotton. I think I'll do the lingerie bag.
  • i would wash in cold, reshape, and lay flat to dry.

you could always handwash it if you're worried.
