Ugh. I was prepared for the bleeding and I was pretty prepared for the clots, but the size of baseballs? Really?
I'm just kind of wondering if other people have or are experiencing this also, and how long it lasted.
My regular bleeding is lighter than a normal period which is awesome. Our first night home from the hospital, I had issues with gushing blood everytime I tried to stand up or move. Then I would go into the bathroom and pass a clot. Then for the rest of the week the bleeding got lighter everyday. Today, I noticed some more bright red blood so I thought I was over doing it and laid down for a while. When I went to get up, I noticed the big gush again so I went to the bathroom, and two gigantic baseball size clots came out a couple minutes apart. The bleeding slowed for a while, but then I was sitting and stood up, and the same thing happened (smaller clots this time).
I was so optimistic and happy that the bleeding had slowed, but now this again!? It feels so gross and to be honest, its just very inconvenient when I'm trying to care for DD and I can't even stand up without gushing!
How long does this part of it last? And is it "normal" (based on experience) for the clots to come and go days apart like that?
Re: Clots and bleeding- TMI
This!!!
This.
Yikes! I would call your doctor.
I've been able to use a pantyliner for the last 10 days, and never passed a clot bigger than a quarter...

This is nothing to mess around with. I started having bleeding like this at 3 weeks 3 days PP. The bleeding had almost stopped and then I'd get these huge gushes that would fill one of those super absorbent pads, ruin my underwear, and pants.
Monday- It happened twice within an hour and I rested, read my pregnancy advice books and ended up calling the midwife on call that night. She said I'd "over done it" that day and that this was common. She also said that if it happened again the next day to call the office and be seen by one of the doctors.
Tuesday- It happened the next morning only worse than the two times before- whole bathroom looked like a crime scene. I felt lightheaded. Called my husband home from work. Got a doctors appointment that afternoon. Doctor did and internal and told me I was "fine" and that bleeding was "normal" for up to 6 weeks pp. I left feeling like I'd made a big deal out of nothing and feeling a bit stupid but still unsettled.
Wednesday- Nursing my daughter and it happened again. Called the dr's office angry. How could I even consider resuming a semi-normal life and leave the house when this kind of gushing blood just keeps happening with no warning. None of my mom friends had experienced anything similar. Doctor's office schedules me for a sonogram the next morning. Just after I got myself cleaned up, gushing blood again. This time, I'm holding my daughter. I'm stuck on the toilet with blood running out of me such that it sounded like I was peeing a small amount. Called my husband at work asked him to come home (he was more than an hour away). Started getting faint, hot, and nauseous and was terrified I would drop DD or pass out with no one there to care for her. We have no family in the area. Ended up calling 911. Hated to do it but didn't feel like I had a choice. DH called a neighbor to come get DD until he could get home. Spent 8 hours in the ER. Had sonogram there only to find that I had retained placenta or something in uterus.
Thursday- Had to have surgery (D&C) and was supposed to go home afterward. Ended up being admitted due to excessive blood loss. Turned out they didn't get all the placenta out of me at delivery. Needless to say, I will be switching doctors.
The bottom line- listen to your gut and your body. Ask for a sonogram.
If anyone reads this, just a follow up:
At the urging of you ladies, I called the after hours OB and told them what was up. They were very non-concerned.
It was odd. They said that since I hadn't passed any that big since the birth, and only the two clots were ginormous (the rest have been smaller pieces, less than quarter size) and it hasn't happened since then, they said just to watch it. If it happened again, I was to go to the Urgent Care center and the on- call OB would check it out.
Thankfully it hasn't happened since those two, and the bleeding is back to being just a little more than bloody/brown discharge (yum). That being said, I'm placing a call to my OB at office open on Tuesday, even just to let her know how the on-call OB acted when I was basically thinking my uterus was falling out!
This is why I actually like the Bump! Had I not thought it was a big enough deal, I wouldn't have called! (I haven't read any pregnancy books since I was about 4 months along so I guess I just didn't realize... ::hangs head in shame::)
Thanks ladies!
