Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Suddenly terrified to take a bath?

I ran the water and stripped him down. As soon as we started moving to the bathroom, he flipped out. It wasn't an "i don't want to take a bath or go to bed" type of scream. It was a "completely petrified at the thought of going in there" type of scream. He screamed the entire time and I had to get in because he wouldn't let go and he hugged me the whole time.

He hasn't had any bad things happen and he was fine as soon as he was out of the bathroom.

Larsen started doing this about a month ago.  He used to throw a fit because he wanted to take a bath all the time, then he started to throw fits because he didn't want to take a bath.  UGH!  Now, he is getting better and not crying.  He loves the pool still, so I guess it's some weird bath phase!

  • DD went through the same thing at about the same age. It only lasted a week or so and we never figured out a reason why it was happening.  From reading posts on here I think it's pretty common.

When she went through this the only thing we did differently was to speed up bath time. Then one day she was fine again.

I hope it passes quickly for you.

  • DD is going through this now.  One time last week she just screamed her head off when trying to get her in the bath.  We eventually just put her in and washed her as she stood at the side sobbing/screaming.  :(  The next two times were the same.  We're not sure why, but I guessed it was probably just a phase.  I hope it passes quickly, its sad watching her scream like that.
  • I recently read an article about this.  It is apparently very common.  They recommended, not filling the tub and let the child stand in it empty, and spunge bath for a night or two.  Then fill just alittle, and increase every night.  They related it to the child realizing that the water goes down the drain and they fear they might also.  Who knows if that is the reason.  But the method is worth a shot.  It also said to show the child that you put your hand on and off the drain with no problem.  Good luck.

LOL, I'm a horrible mother!  Last week for bath time when I would drain the tub I'd wave bye bye to the water and Casey would say bye bye too and look at it go down the drain.  Now of course this week she is terrified of the bath and I never understood why til this comment! Maybe this is why! I scarred her for life.
