Would you tape your birth?

I have a friend who just gave birth and she video taped it! I have heard of people doing this, but personally, I never would. I remember feeling it and I'm afraid that if I taped it the first time, and then saw it, I would never want to do it again! LOL. Don't get me wrong, it was a beautiful moment, but I'm glad I didn't see it happen. I also would never want a mirror placed in front of me.  DH watched and while he said it was amazing and he wouldn't trade that experience for the world, he's glad we didn't tape it either, because those images are in his mind forever and he won't need to watch a video to remember them!

Would you video your birth? And if you are planning to, is it just for personal use, or would you show it to others? I'm just not comfortable with it, but that's just my personal opinion!

  • No.

  • Not a chance.  Just NMS, but I have heard of others doing it.
  • Heck no.
  • I want to tape if not necessarily because I want to see the baby coming out of my vagina but to remind me of the experience of birthing as a whole. I don't think I would show it to anyone, probably just for myself. I doubt DH would ever want to watch it.

Plus we just got a Vid Cam that records HD quality and I plan to take some stills as well for a scrapbook.

  • No way!

Let me tell you a story. lol

When H was about 12 he was at his friend's house. They were looking for a tape of a movie that his friend recorded on TV. They found a tape that was not labeled. What do they see as soon as it starts playing? Up close and personal of the friend's sister's vag with a baby coming out.

  • DH wants to tape it...im sure that we'd like it later (or not!!), but we probably wont do it. especially since no one will be in the room but DH and I.

  • I don't think so...

My hubby and I are buying a high-definition video camera to record our baby's first moments (and much more, obviously), but I don't think we'll be recording the birth. It doesn't seem to me like something either of us would want to look back on afterwards...>.>

  • I wouldn't, but my OB doesn't allow the taping of the actual birth, just before and after.

LOL that reminds me of the story my DH told me about when him and his brother were little and found a tape under his mom's bed and lo and behold it was a "home movie"courtesy of mom and dad! Surprise

To the OP: no videotaping, lots of after pics though!

  • Nope nope nope. I don't want to see my vagina with two babies coming out of it. I don't want anyone other than doctors seeing my vagina with two babies coming out of it. I have instructed my husband and mom (who will both be in the room with me) that they are to have their backs to my vagina, lol :) We will, however, be taping me from the boobs up AFTER the babies are born and handed to me :)
  • Just FYI, our hospital also doesn't allow you to tape the births because of HIPAA violations.  (Which, knowing the nature of HIPAA, actually sounds like a BS made-up reason.  Honestly, I don't think doctors want each motion they make during a delivery to be taped because somebody, somewhere could find something "wrong" in what they did and sue them.  Just my opinion though).  You might want to look into your hospital's policies before making that decision.
  • No, I wouldn't. I don't know when I would ever want to watch it. I have no desire to pop a tape in right now and watch me push out DS and poop on myself.

  • No no and no! I don't want anyone seeing that except for the doc and nurses. DH said he didn't even want to see LO come out  of me.

  • We're not taping/taking photos of the birth. We would prefer to have only our memories of the experience.

No I'm not really interested in seeing it again, and definitely not in HD.

  • It depends.  My husband will be a couple of states away doing field training which = no phone/no internet.  If the Red Cross can't get him flown to the hospital in enough time when I go into labor, I do plan on having my mom tape it for him, but from my p.o.v.... not a direct money shot.  But then I probably plan on erasing it.
  • I actually taped my DS's birth, but it wasn't "up & close" We just put the camcorder on the side on a shelf.  You couldn't see anything except me pushing (which I had an epidural so it wasn't bad), But it is cool to watch it & see my 1st facial reactions when they put him on my chest. And then the camcorder is picked up & shows the nurses cleaning him up & weighing him & stuff.  But I would never do a shot of the baby coming out.  But at my doctor now they don't allow videos so I can't do it this time.

  • We are going to tape it, but w/o the vag shots.  Just me pushing and then LO being placed in my arms....
  • Nope, do not plan on any videotapes or mirrors! Our memories will be enough :-)

    LOL

  • No, none of that. I can't imagine anyone else would want to watch me in that moment (and I don't want anyone else to see me other than DH and mom...if I did I'd invite them all in!), and a mirror would probably make me completely freak out. Just the thought that I'd see what's happening to me freaks me out.

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

  • NO! I'm way to private of a person to do that.  Not to mention, I don't want to see what my privates look like as a kids is coming out!

I'm ok with photo or video prior to pushing or after it's all done, but I'm not comfortable with any of that while I'm pushing or exposed in any way. I'm a very private person and wouldn't be comfortable with a camera or video camera going while private parts of my body were exposed.
  • NO! The idea creeps me out.
  • I didn't even videotape my wedding. There is no way in HELL I would tape the birth.

I am having a repeat c-section. While I wouldn't tape the whole birth, I would love to have the moment the baby is lifted from me (minus cut-open belly shot) and to hear those first cries. DH got them on our digital camera with baby #2 and I love it. There's no shots (that I can recall) of my gaping belly, just of the baby. Then DH followed the baby with the camera while he got weighed and they did their initial tests. I wasn't able to see any of that since I was being stitched up, so I am so glad DH got that footage. It's priceless!

That said... if I were having a vaginal birth... no, I would not want my labor/delivery taped. Once the baby is freshly "out" - yes. But no hoo-ha shots, thanks.

  • The hospital I will go to doesn't allow video taping or photographs during the birth. I wouldn't want them anyway. I do want a mirror though! We will probably record some of the first moments to share with friends and as keepsakes.

  • No.  Plus I live in Tennessee and you cannot tape a live birth only still photos.
  • Absolutely not. Especially since I had a c-section. I do not want to see myself sliced open.

  • SO taped the birth of our son and yes i plan on doing it this time around as well. He did better than I thought he would considering DS was the 1st child for the both of us & he's never witnessed anything like that before! I've only watched it twice, but seeing as how I was only in labor for 5 hours, the actual pushing until baby popped out part only lasted MAYBE 5 mins.

  • I've actually been asked to record the births for my friend for all three of her children. Not only did it help me prepare mentally for my own birth but I made sure not to get too graphic...heck it wasn't anything I wanted to see either, at least from my friend.  Two of her births were water births though so being underwater it's just not that graphic.

Now, do I want to? I don't know. I wouldn't mind recording the moment the baby is given to me the first time, whether it's right after birth or however it will be done. I think it's a beautiful moment to capture if you can. Not the laboring part though...I'm sure I won't want to remember that hahaha.

  • Guys the camera does not have to be pointed at your vagina!  We videotaped the birth process.  I was on the camera but a sheet covered my legs so you weren't seeing my vagina.  You heard what was going on and saw facial expressions and as soon as the baby was put on my stomach.  DH then started video taping only baby and I was no longer in the picture so delivering the afterbirth and all was not even seen.  To me not a big deal and I like to look back at them :o)

  • Yes, we are more than likely going to tape the birth...being that my husband is going to be deployed in Iraq and this is our first baby! But we'll definitely be leaving out the direct shots of my vagina ...but I definitely want to capture this experience if for some reason he is on a convoy and is not able to skype the birth with me!

This is something I'm going to be inquiring about with OB's I check out in the states. (We are stationed in Germany right now but I am going home to the states for the duration of my pregnancy in about 2 weeks and will be staying with family until the baby is about 3 mos old, then my husband will come to the states after his deployment to meet our LO and bring us back to Germany along with our 2 labs that are at my parents.)
