December 2010 Moms

Please be honest with me

I came out to work today. Everyone was all excited for me. Then they asked the names. So I told them, if its a boy its "Cooper". They all laughed. Like...hysterical laughter. They said that Im scaring him for life and that thats the name you give a kid when you want them to get beat up everyday.

Not really the reaction I was hoping for.

So you tell me, whats your HONEST opinion about Cooper. FWIW, It would be Cooper Alan M.

  • This is exactly why we aren't sharing names with anyone.  I don't want to hear anyones thoughts or reactions!

I actually like Cooper.  He might have a nn of Coop, not sure how that goes with your last name?  That would be my only concern.

This is exactly why we're not going to share names until baby is here.  Sorry for the reaction at work - very jerky of them.

  • I think that Cooper is an adorable name.  Did they elaborate on why your would be "scaring him for life"?

  • I like it. I think it is unique, but not too unique. And it's a name that will grow well. It works for babies, kids and grown men.

On another note, this is exactly why we are not telling a soul about our names. Inevitably someone will laugh in your face, and make you feel horrible. The only solution is to say, meet baby X. The kid already has the name, and that is that.

  • I don't see anything wrong with that name, definitely would not think he would get beat up over it. It's not a name I personally like, but if someone told me that was the name of their son I wouldn't think anything of it.

You and DH pick the name you want, not based on what other people think...bottom line. They were rude imo. I know some kids with some off the wall names and guess what, they don't get picked on for them.

You sick with the name you want. Don't let others influence you.

  • I like it!  we aren't telling anyone names before the baby is born and named for this exact reason. people can't keep their dumb opinions to themselves! guaranteed if you had not told them until after the baby was born they would have all said "oh what a cute name!"

  • Gah...I hate people with opinions on your business. Cooper in't a name I would choose, but I'm sure it will fit your LO perfectly! Don't worry about what other people think about anything having to do with your kid. Opinions are like butt holes, everyone has one...they wouldn't show you their butt hole, so why give you their opinion if you don't ask?

  • Honestly....DH and I LOVE that name and it is on our short list of names. I do not understand at all why that name would be scaring! We have shared names that we like, but I think it might be a good idea to save the name we choose till after the baby is born. Lord knows nobody better tell me they don't like the name when I am holding my newborn!!!

  • I didnt want to tell people what the name was going to be, but my mother (once again!) outted me. She wrote the name on FB, on my wall, and i am friends with a few people from work on there. So it was pretty much out anyways.

  • Like PPs have said, I agree that it's a fine name and will grow well with your LO.  Name your child what you want and screw the goofballs with rude opinions and no tact.

This reminds me of a good friend who named her son Gage two years ago.  One of her aunts hated the name and absolutely refuses to call him Gage.  I think she calls him Drew, which is short for his middle name Andrew.  My friend initially fought back with her aunt on it but eventually gave up because she was tired of the argument and just chalked it up to Crazy Aunt Betty behavior.

Anyway - sorry for the digression.  Cooper is a nice name and you should pick what you want for your kid.

  • Cooper is strange?  News to me.  That's actually one of the boy names I like that is a little unique but isn't Uneek.  I think you're fine.  I know a couple Coopers (I used to teach pre school) and they were all adorable.

  • I really like it.

And with your last name, he could be a cowboy!! :) (it just sounds like a cowboy name, lol)

Cooper Allen can play with Wyatt Jamison and we'll end up setting up a whole OK Corral for them or an Alamo. *grins*

  • I think the name is adorable!!!  You would think you said Melvin or something, geesh!!!!!!  And as other people have said, this is why we didn't tell anyone my son's name till after he was born.  I don't quite care what people this of his name but didn't have the energy to debate my choice or entertain their suggestions so I kept it hush hush
  • Cooper is number one right now on our boys list.....I love love love it but I love our number two name as well, Walker, but everyone keeps telling me they will call him Texas ranger. which pisses me off but not enough to not consider it as a name...

It's NMS, but there's nothing wrong with it.

My mom was the one who told me not to share the name with anyone. When she was pregnant with me, she told the name to her parents. The fallout was so horrible that she went into early labor. She told me that it's not worth the drama.

  • I think it's a great name.  I have a cousin and his last name is Cooper, and people call him Coop all the time.  I think it's a fun nickname too.  Your co-workers clearly suck.  I have no idea what's wrong with people.  I hope you gave them all really dirty looks...or the finger.

Speaking of names, I keep meaning to ask you if your name is in reference to the movie Can't Hardly Wait.  I love that movie and think it's amazingly quotable and hysterical, but apparently not as many people have seen it as I thought from the lack of response when I try to quote .  Just wanted to ask :)

  • I like Cooper - very cute. This is the reason I hesitate to talk about names w/ friends and family also. Someone's always got an opinion.
  • Weird! Cooper seems like a totally normal name to me. I can't see why they'd laugh.

Sorry, some people are jerks! You just have to laugh it off. Big Smile

  • I can't believe they gave you that reaction. How rude of them. I don't know why people do things they do. Cooper is a good name. There's nothing wrong with it. At the end of the day, it's your baby and it's your choice on the name. No one else's.

  • This is the exact reason we are not telling people the name of our LO.  I hope people will be less likely to say anything once the LO is here and the birth certificate is signed.

    FWIW I really like Cooper.

  • I actually really like the name Cooper.  It's one of the many boys' names I suggested to DH, which he quickly shot down.  I'll have to ask him why.  I don't see how or why a child would get beat up over that name.  It's not a crazy name or a girly name.

Your co-workers just suck.  Why do people feel the need to share every opinion and thought they have?  One of my friends just named her son Remi and, though I don't like it, I didn't say a word.  I plan on telling people my names if they ask.  I really hope they are not jerks about it.  I need to come up with some smart remark in case people do say something.

  • I don't get their reaction either.  I actually love the name Cooper. We have friends who are naming their little boy Cooper. I think it's a great name.  Their comments were very rude and totally uncalled for.
  • I really like Cooper (although Cooper Pooper is inevitable). It would be on our list but I have a close friend who has a Cooper.

  • First, I'm sorry that your co-workers are jerks. Cooper though is NMS. Sorry, but I have known too many dogs named Cooper. That being said though, I don't think it is awful and that you are scarring your child for life by naming him that. Also, I like a name that could be controversial....you just have to go with your gut.

  • Tell them so shut the F**K UP! It's not their baby they dont need to worry about what it's name will be. I swear some people were raised in a barn!!!!
  • I like that name! Screw what the others think!! What a bunch of douchebags.
  • One of my close friends has a one year old son (actually, today is his birthday) named Cooper.  I've never thought anything negative about his name, and for that matter, have never heard one negative opinion on it.  I think it's cute and it definately fits him,

I say, to hell with them.  If it's a name you love, go with it.  Besides, it's not the name that makes the kid; it's the kid who makes the name.

  • Ok, I'll be honest.

I do like the name Cooper.  However, I think it's something I would name a dog before I would name my child.  Probably because it's close to Copper and I think of The Fox and The Hound.  Then there was that TV show LONG ago, "Hanging with Mr. Cooper."  It's completely up to you, but there are far worse names out there than Cooper.

    1. It's spelled how it's normally spelled.  (it's not like your name is Kouper)

    2. It's not made up.

    So 1 + 2 = Yes

  • I can't believe that your coworkers acted so unbelievably rude! I was planning on telling our top name choices, but now I'm seriously reconsidering. I don't want everyone's opinions when we have decided on a name that we both love...

Sorry, would they want something with my y's? Or maybe Optimus?

This 100%!!!! I am not sharing names with anyone but DH because I don't care what the rest of the world thinks about it.  We have our reasons for the names we like and that should be all that matters.  Lovely when people tell you your child is going to get beat up over something, what a-holes!

  • Thanks ladies, I appreciate it! It just really hurt my feelings you know?

  • Cooper is a great name - actually really like it - but our neighbors (& close friends) already have a Coop...who is an awesome, goodhearted, balanced, fun - AND super-cool kid!  He's in Jr High & doing just fine with his name...no daily beatings & has lots of friends...although he IS irrationally scared of clowns & always has been.

But aren't most kids scared of clowns anyway??!

Don't listen to them...people just want you to decide on something they suggested to make them feel like a part of everything...but it's not about them, is it?

  • That's stupid, I went to school with a Cooper and he was a pretty cool guy, very popular.
  • I love the name Cooper and wish DH did. It would have been on our potential name list.
