I had my first prenatal massage about a month ago, and found it to be pretty uncomfortable b/c the therapist had me lying on one side or the other the whole time. It felt very awkward since my arm and shoulder seemed to be in the way. This person specializes in prenatal massage, so at first I assumed this was what was normal and considered safe, but got to thinking maybe I'd ask you ladies if you've had similar experiences..? I have another appt. for a massage tomorrow and want to bring this to the attention of the therapist, so I appreciate any pointers or advice you might have. Thanks!

What Are Your Thoughts on Tap Dancing Penguins?
Yes. That is correct. They dont want you on your tummy at any point. I have been having them monthy and even at 5 weeks i needed to be on my side. The pillows are strange but if you lay in them correctly they are very supportive. It took me 2 times to figure out the right way.. Look at the pillow next time and then lay in it.
For your arm I put my arm under my head and the other one on the side. I understand that a bigger belly that you get the more supportive the pillow is.
Exactly! Before my first appt, I assumed I'd have something where there was a hole for my belly to go (not that my belly is out-of-control yet... honestly I sleep on my stomach all the time). Prior to pg, I went for massages all the time and find them totally relaxing, but the last one sucked and now is when I need/want one most!

When I went to school for Massage, we were taught to only lie the Mommy on her left side OR semi-reclined unless we had these special support pillows. They had a hole cut out of the middle, so depending on how far along Mommy was, she might be able to lay Prone without putting any pressure on the baby. Not all practices have them and they may have done studies or something that show those special pillows to be unsafe. I got my degree 6 years ago, now, so it could have changed.
