Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When should a baby be off of jarred baby food?

Sorry, I guess it should read, "When should a toddler be off of jarred baby food?"

I am just curious as I am trying to get Brooke on all table food. She does well with Stage 3 baby foods and finger foods like puffs, cheerios, etc, but when I do pasta/pancakes/bread ... she stores it all in her mouth then gags when it's time to swallow. No idea what's going on.

I digress. When do you think they should be solely on table food?

  • I don't think there is every really a time they have to be but it is good for them to learn to eat table foods and start with utensils.  I know some 18+ month olds still on purees to get in their veggies and fruits. :) DD hated purees and was on all table foods by 11 months.

sidenote:  I looked at your blog last week (I promise I'm not a stalker, I just like finding new blogs to read) and I have a Brooke and a dachshund too. :)  I happened to click your link when you wrote your birthday story for her and my water broke between 4:30 and 5am and I had her at 8:17.  So weird! lol

  • Our pedi was adamant that DS "eat what we eat" by 12 months, no more baby food. Ha ha ha -- that didn't work out. He still eats some baby food now -- he can eat other foods fine, but he likes them and will eat vegetables that way.

Gah! Your Brooke is a little DOLL! Do you know what you are naming your next little girl? I am always curious what people name their next child, especially when they already have a Brooke in the house-- makes me think if we have the same naming style!

And I totally don't think you're a stalker... you should follow so I can follow you too (assuming you have a blog) :)

This makes me feel a little better. I am trying to get her onto table food only, but a part of me thinks that I shouldn't rush this whole thing...

  • DS is 13 months old and still gets purees but eats a lot of table foods as well..

He won't eat veggies at all unless they are pureed and some fruit that I am not sure if he can really eat...

  • I think we really started working on just table food around 12 months - luckily DS is a great eater and gobbles up whatever is in front of him no matter what form it's in so it was a quick & easy transition. I don't think I'd worry about 100% table food for a while, just add a little at a time & hopefully she'll get the hang of it.
  • Well, my LO is 16 mos and still eats jarred food from time to time. I think it's a great way to sneak in some veggies - he is pickier about his table foods - and also can be a super huge convenience for me. When we went on vacation, I would often give him something jarred as breakfast. That way, I knew we could get moving quicker than if I let him do his own thing, then had to clean up, etc. Same with snack time - healthier snack choices like fruit can also be a little messy so every once in a while a nice jarred food saved me some hassle :).
  • We switched him tot able foods around 13 months. He loves peas and green beans and corn. He doesnt really like fresh fruit we buy those mish mash things and he drinks those during the day for fruit. Other than that 13 months was it for us.
