S/O second time c/s mamas

How long did you stay in the hospital with #2?

My c.s is schedule for 7:30 AM Tuesday 6/1.  Since it's so early in the day, I'm hoping I can stay Tues, Wed, and come home Thurs afternoon.

They already told me my staples have to be in for a week due to it being the second c/s... last time I stayed the 4 days because I wanted my staples out before I went home.  That obviously is not an option this time.

Do you think 2 nights is delusional?  Super Angry

Re: S/O second time c/s mamas

  • That is almost the EXACT schedule I had w/ Alana!  Went in for c/s the morning after Memorial Day, went home Thursday.  We were actually trying to get out of there Thursday am, but due to p/w and annoying nurses, we left the hospital around 12:30pm.

I can't recall if your 1st c/s was planned or emergency??  They say the recovery for planned is much quicker than emergency, since there is no laboring (which was true for me... pretty easy recovery!).  SO- maybe that will be another reason you will get to leave earlier???

And- woooohooooo... YOU are SOOOOO close!!! :)  Are you ready?  Is Alex ready?

  • two nights isnt crazy at all. I only stayed 2 nights after having orion. i am pretty sure they took out my staples before i left though. I really just wanted to be home after my 2nd night. My nurses were not very helpful and they didnt want me using the good pain meds anymore, so i felt like if all iwas going to be taking is vicoden in the hospital, with nurses who dont want to help me, i might as well be at home where i can take my drugs on time and get help. :)

  • I'm not even pg but I think I would not push for just 2 nights. I stayed 3.5 nights - I delivered at 11:45 pm on Wednesday night and went home on Saturday morning.  I had a pretty easy recovery but I was still pretty sore when I went home.  I was certainly not ready to have a toddler climbing all over me.  I would say better to take care of yourself so that when you get home your body is healed enough to take care of not only yourself but both of your kids.

  • 4 night with Carter, 3 nights with Spencer.  They actually offered to send me home after 2 nights with Spencer, but I declined.  So I don't think 2 nights is delusional - I wasn't quite ready to go home, but it was a safe option.
  • I wasn't physically ready to go home after two nights, but that's me.  I was more than happy to stay my four nights - I totally milked the nursing staff for all I could.

I'm curious why the staples will stay in for a week?  This was my 2nd c/s and they sent me home with the steri-strips after 4 days.

I stayed 3 nights.  I definitely didn't feel up to going home the 2nd night but I had some really severe swelling issues and they were still bad on day 2.  Also I didn't even have staples my 2nd time, I did the 1st but not the 2nd, hmmm weird I guess.  I don't think 2 nights is delusional, you'll just have to see how you feel.
  • Kelli!  That is *exactly* my ideal schedule!  Crazy.  I *think* I'm ready (are you ever really ready?!?!?), Alex is doing well, has been very, very "Mommy clingy" for the past week or so but I think he's going to be great.

The whole staple thing- the docs said because there is scar tissue there already, it takes longer to heal up, adn they want to be absolutely sure it's adhered before they take the staples out.  Funny that some of you got them out early.  The staples freaked me out last time so we'll see I guess.  My last ob appt is Thursday, so I'm going to ask her about that.

I totally was not ready to go home til Day 4 with Alex... I just think this time will be different since I'll have him at home.  But, if not, I'll listen to my instinct and stay longer.

Thanks for all your replies!  Keep 'em coming!

  • Interesting about the staples. . . my doc went right through the old scar and the only mention of an issue was the left side of my new scar will be slightly thicker than the right b/c I had more scar tissue on that side from c/s #1.  The staples are weird.  I totally felt like Frankenstein ;)  Thankfully I remembered that the removal didn't hurt 'cause that freaked me out the first time around.

As for heading home early, just wait to see how you feel!  I thought I'd want to get out of there a day or two early, but not so much when I was in the thick of it.  That may also have been due in part to the fact that I labored and pushed before my c/s.  So glad I won't be doing that with dc#3!

Yeah, I can't imagine that!  I was scheduled the first time around and will be this time as well )as long as he stays put another week!).

  • I stayed 2 nights with both boys.  I HATE the hospital.  I was so ready to be out of there!  Although looking back one more night might have been nice cause for me once I got home I just felt like mommy again and was wanting to do everything around the house.  I had my staples in when I left and that was not fun but the week went fast.  It felt SO good to get them out!  Can't wait to meet Slash!
  • I can't believe how close you are!

I had Riley Monday morning and was discharged at noon on Wednesday.  I wanted to get the heck out of there.

They took my staples out before I left.

  • Obviously I have only had one so far, but my doctor didn't staple, she used derma-bond. It held up really well, I didn't have any skin stitches at all. So I guess your doctor would probably say no, but it can't hurt to ask about it.
