Has anyone tried an external version?

DS is breech and my OB could preform an external version this week.  If I choose not to, then I will be scheduling a c-setion for June 4th.  I'm on the fence about having one.  My OB did a successful one last week but the baby's heart rate decellerated after so he montiored it for a bit.  Everyone I personally know who've had one done didn't have success and said they wouldn't do it again.  I know there can be a higher success rate if it's your second pregnancy since the uterus is stretched a bit already.  At any rate, I'm almost leaning more towards a c-section.  I don't know if I want to put the added stress on the baby and my OB, who delivers his own babies, is on vacation the week I'm due but he could do my c-section.  Plus there's always the wonder if the baby flips will he flip back again.  This is such a hard decision!

So anyone have an external version done before?  I'd love to hear your experience and if you'd recommend it.  And if you ended up having a c-section I'd love to hear that experience as well.

Re: Has anyone tried an external version?

  • Not even sure how they do that--but I did end up with a c/s because even prior to being induced, he started going in to distress.  Obviously not my first choice but we had NO choice--and it all worked out.  Overall, the recovery wasn't horrible---but it wasn't a cakewalk either.  I mean, you can barely walk, can't laugh, etc.  Breastfeeding was rough b/c your uterus is contracting and yet has just been cut open---

BUT you are back to yourself in 6 wks or so.  Tops.  Even after week 2 you really start to feel better.  I had issues with them pulling some muscles under my ribs--so I couldn't lay flat for about 2 wks or so--which sucked--but if that hadn't happened, I'm sure things would have been different for me.

If there was any risk to the baby--I wouldn't chance it.  C/S aren't that bad....you will heel.  The worst part is just feeling a little out of it after the baby arrives and not really being able to hold them right away.

  • I had one done with my first and would not repeat it with this one even if I wanted to try vaginal birth. It was horribly painful and it didn't work. The success rate is not that great, although I remember them telling me it rarely works with first time babies, but second or third babies it does have a better success rate. I don't know what that is.

But long story short, I would not recommend it.
