Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Solid foods - not till 8 months?

Anyone start this late??  I'm afraid DS isnt loving solid foods and might be a late bloomer - seems like there is so much pressure for FF babies to eat solid foods between 4-6 months!! I know I shouldnt worry yet...we have only tried cereal for one week and this week we are going to take a break all together and start with oatmeal on Saturday.

  • My pedi told me to start Elijah at 4 months.  I honestly wasn't feeling it.  He was doing just fine with the formula he had, and until he started acting hungrier, I wasn't going to push it.  He just wasn't ready.  I only started with veggies last week and he's doing much better with the spoon, but still not great.  I think 8 months is a little long, but if you don't want to try for another few weeks or a month, I think you'll be okay.

There is some thought that waiting longer to introduce solids can increase the likelihood of allergies- the optimal time to start introducing is 6m. Just keep trying. It can take up to 10 offers of a food for babies to start to like it. Maybe try some fruit or veggies instead- there is no "rule" that babies have to eat cereal to start.

I felt like it took us forever to finally get the formula right that I didnt want to try solids yet.  We waited til 5.5 months when his head was more steady and he was okay with sitting his bumbo like seat.  He did fine with taking a few bites but then he would go into sucking his thumbs - I think this was his way of saying no thanks but I stuck it out for a week.  Taking a break this week and then going to try oatmeal ...maybe it was the rice cereal he didnt like???

  • Tegan HATED the rice cereal and one night I add 1/2 a teaspoon of sugar (out of frustration) and she finally ate it, but I felt really guilty about adding the sugar. So, DH and I decided that if we were going to give her something other than formula then it should have a strong nutritional value. We gave her some carrots and she LOVED them. So far she's had carrots, green beans, sweet potatos, bananas and squash. The only one she's seemed to dislike so far is the bananas.
