Last year, my cat of 10 years died unexpectedly, leaving behind her littermate, Mackenzie. I thought Mackenzie was lonely, so in July, we got a new kitten.
Well, I don't know what the deal is with this kitten, but DH is way more allergic to her than the other cat. He had to start seeing an allergist pretty much right after we got her (in conjunction with asthma and other stuff, so I was not aware right away that the cat was the main problem). Even though he has never complained (he even says he's fine as long as he takes meds daily), he has expressed a lot of concern about LO being as allergic to the cat as he is.
Regardless of whether LO inherits DH's allergies...if DH keeps bringing up how concerned he is, HE is obviously miserable. I know he would never make the decision for me to give up this kitten, so I had to do it. It was just becoming increasingly obvious that my husband was unhappy and not feeling well.
A very good friend of mine who I trust completely, and who lives down the street from us, is super excited to take the kitten. I couldn't ask for a better solution, but I still feel awful for having to rehome her. She's a great cat but DH's health > pet.
Blerg.
Re: have to do something sucky...
I'm sorry
.
It will be better though, and at least you can still visit the kitty!
Here is my two cents from what I learned back in college:
Basically, when you are allergic to cats, you are not allergic to their "dander"...you are allergic to a protein in their saliva. When they groom themselves and then rub against you or you breath in their dander...that's what stirs up your allergies.
The good news is that the proteins are genetically different in each cat. Which means one cat can carry that protein but another may not. That's probably why DH is allergic to one cat and not the other. Also, that means that your baby may not be allergic to the kitty either, but there really is no way to tell without just seeing what happens.
I hope this works out for you and this was probably more info than you could ever use, but I hope it helps anyways.
Good luck!
Thank you, I was wondering how she caused such awful allergies when the other one doesn't!
