Birth Stories

Davis's Birth Story - Face Presentation Unplanned C-Section - LONG

I had my little boy on February 5th, so this needed to be written a while ago.  Here goes.

I had been measuring big during the last 2 months of my pregnancy, to the point that my doctor stopped telling me my fundal height! :)  But everything else looked good and doctor was not too concerned because he thought my hips looked big enough to handle the delivery (to a point).

On February 4th, we went in for our 39 week appointment.  The nurse came in and took my blood pressure and noticed it was a little high so that doctor also took it when he got in to the room.  They wanted to monitor it but it was too high to be overly concerned.  He then measured by fundal height and said that the baby had had a huge growth spurt in the past week.  Which I thought was weird because I felt like he had dropped a little more and that the measurement would be smaller.  He decided that we needed to go in for an ultrasound but the ultrasound place was already closed.  So we had to wait until the next morning to schedule it and they were able to get us in that morning.  Either way, my doctor wanted to induce me on the 5th due to the size, he just wanted to confirm with the ultrasound.

The next morning I went to work and wrapped some things up.  Our ultrasound was at 11am and we had the same technician that did our 20 week appointment.  She was great and the baby was estimated at 9lbs 11oz.  The ultrasound doctor called my OB and he wanted us to go meet him at his office (which is in the hospital).  We meet him there and talk to him about the results.  He decides that I should be induced right now.  He called labor and delivery and clears a bed.  I thought that we would have time to go get lunch but no, he walked us over straight to L&D!!!

By this time I'm getting so excited!  We knew today we would be admitted but we didn't know it would be so quickly!  We did all of the paper and got in to our room.  I was already 2 cm and 75% effaced so they started right in with the pitocin and I was have non-painful contractions every 3 minutes from 1-4pm.

My BF Sara came and kept me company and took some pictures for us.  We started watching a movie because I thought I would have tons of time.  I don't know why I picked this but we watched "Love Actually".  I love that movie but I completely forgot about the nude scenes which would have been fine except they kept coming on the screen when I was being checked!!!  I'm sure that the nurses and docs thought we were some really weird people!!!

At 4 pm, they decide to break my water to speed up process because I still wasn't feeling any pain from the contractions.  As the doctor on call breaks my water she says that its clear (which I was very relieved) and then so goes to check me again.  She makes a really weird face - I hate when medical people do this!  So I ask what the problem is and she explains that instead of feeling the top of the babies head, she is feeling his face.  It's called face presentation and happens in 0.2% of births.  Because we were already concerned about his size, we decided that a c-section would be the best way to go.

30 mintues later I'm walking in to the operating room and getting the spinal (which was not bad at all).  It went so quickly or maybe I was just out of it but before I knew it, he was out and wailing!  What a beautiful sound!!! I was able to see him getting cleaned up and checked the whole time and I bawled like a baby while they stitched me up.  I held him while they wheeled me to the recovery room which was amazing that he didn't leave my side ever during the whole thing!!!  I did have the shakes while they during and after they operated and had some itching and nausea from the pain medication.

I got to feed him right after we got back to our room and he fell right asleep.  My parents were driving in for the birth and were so upset that they missed seeing me before but were so excited to the him after only an hour or so.

Davis is an amazing baby and I would do it all over again for an experience like that!  I had a great hospital stay and recovered very quickly!!
