We almost had this happen. A couple of years ago my DH fell asleep (or lets say passed out) with a glass of red wine in his hand on my friend's white couch. You can imagine what happened.
Her husband had already gone to bed and us girls were in the kitchen playing cards (it was really late).
He came into the kitchen with a mortified look on his face and said "I think we just bought a couch". Luckily, we got it out, but yah, if we didn't, we definitely would've bought them a new one whether they said "don't worry about it", or not.
Yes. I have the whole "Catholic guilt" thing going on and it would constantly be on my mind otherwise. If it was something that truly was irreplaceable, I'm not sure how I'd make it right though
I would. And I'm impressed your MIL offered to pay for the candy dish - mine would have said, "Oh well, accidents happen" and then laughed. Like she did when her dog chewed a pair of $200 shoes of mine after dragging them out of my suitcase. I'm still holding a grudge for that one - they were favorites. An offer to at least help to replace them would have been lovely.

depends on whoes home it was--my parents or in-laws would really not want us to pay . . . anywhere else YES
