My ped talked to us today about positioning Simon's head to one side or the other. If I just roll his head to a side, he rolls it back within a minute. His flat spot is right on the back of his head, so facing either way is okay. Anyway, I jammed a few baby washcloths behind his head to keep it from rolling back. Does that sound like a terrible idea?

Re: Is it safe to (re: head positioning) ?
Totally honestly, that doesn't sound very safe to me. If he was able to turn his head around, he could get his face pressed up against the washcloths.
Our pedi told us to position N so his head would develop evenly. We use a rolled-up towel under his shoulder and hip- that works great and we don't have to worry about it being near his face.

Look into the nest noggin, I think it helps with flat spots on the back.
I do the rolled up receiving blanket under one shoulder and hip
did he tell you to limit use of baby gear? you basically want him off his back while he is awake. bumbo is good and exersaucer if he is old enough and of course a ton of belly time.
Maybe try an interesting, lighted/musical toy (like the Fisher Price aquarium) mounted to the side of the crib, to entice LO to want to keep head turned to the side. Then you can flip LO every other night, so that he turns to each side equally.
But really, flat heads develop from a lot of waking time in equiment like swings, bouncers, and carseats. Almost all babies sleep on their backs, but few develop flat heads, so it's not really the sleep time that is the problem.
