Fish

First, thanks for all of the healthy meal ideas!  You ladies are wonderful and there were so many great ideas!

Okay, I've never purchased, cooked or eaten fish at home.

How do I do it?  If I get Tilapia or Mahi-Mahi, do they come with bones?  How do I ask for it from the seafood counter guy?

Walk me through this, please.

:)

Re: Fish

  • We go to the local fish market to buy.  I have never had Tilapia come with bones.  I think they cut all that out beforehand.  Same with Salmon. I can't speak to the grocery store seafood sections, but the fish market here have super super nice people and have always been incredibly nice and helpful.

It's so good and fresh.  Makes me want some now!

  • most fish come boned- unless you buy a whole fish with eyeballs looking at you. (I only do that during the holidays when I make the Feast of the Seven Fishes for Christmas).

Tilapia is a good starter fish to try. Very light in taste. Its not one of the best fish to buy. Meaning its not the most healthy of fish- but I always suggest people start with tilapia especially if they are super big fish eaters.

  • At the grocery store, if you look go to the seafood counter, there will more than likely be a pile of tilapia filets.  Get a few of those.  They don't have bones or any other weird parts ;)
  • My favorites are fish sticks and orange glazed salmon.  Fish sticks are great to do w/tilapia and mahi.  I cut them into strips, dip in some Egg Beaters, roll in panko and bake till done.

Orange glazed salmon is easy. It's just a mix of orange marmalade, oj, some dijon mustard and top the salmon with it before baking till the fish flakes off with a fork.

I live in a landlocked state so sadly most of my seafood is froze and bone free.

  • I go to the fish counter as well and getr talapia and its already to be cooked you can grill it, broil it, fry it. I get on the food network.com and look up ideas. I like mine grilled with freash veggies.

  • Salmon is a good one to try and easy to cook. We eat alot of salmon here. Do you have a Costco near you? We've always had real good luck with their salmon.
