homemade baby food - fruits

Does anyone puree and freeze homemade apples and/or bananas?  I know that it's not harmful that the fruit browns after being exposed to the air.  Just wondering if the moms always pureed these fruits fresh or do you freeze then thaw them.  Thanks ladies!

Re: homemade baby food - fruits

  • I just mash the banana up fresh with a spoon (it takes 2 seconds) - it doesn't freeze well.

You can definately freeze the apples though.

  • I've frozen them and they worked just fine. I just find it so much more convenient to freeze.

ETA: I've only frozen a banana when mixed with other fruit, if I am giving straight banana I mash it fresh.

We just started bananas and I have been mashing them up fresh each time.  Like you said, it's quick.  How about the apples - I want to try them later this week.  Do they freeze well?  Does the browning from the oxidation bother you or do you add lemon juice when you mash/puree them?  Thanks again!

  • I have never frozen bananas - but I make my own applesauce (pureed apples) and freeze it. It freezes & thaws well and there is no change in color texture or taste. I do NOT add anything to the apples.
  • I used to make apples and never had a problem with them browning. I didn't do anything special, they just didn't turn brown. I know there are some tricks for keeping bananas from turning brown, but bananas are so cheap and easy, that I always just use fresh. I do like the mini bananas, so there is less waste.

  • I buy frozen (peeled) peach slices and mix them with sweet potatoes and apple sauce and then puree them in the blender.  I'll also mix peaches and banana or peaches, banana and (boiled) blueberries.  DD loves that.

I'll freeze the puree in silicone mini muffin pans.  Some cubes go in zip locks, for use within the next week, the others get packaged with the vacuum sealer.  The coloring never really changes.

Good to know.  I was assuming the apples would turn brown.  I would like to mash them up fresh without having to add anything to it.  The apples thaw well too?  Thanks again for all the tips ladies!
