I am afraid of dogs. At best, I'm super uncomfortable around them. I noticed when DD had her first dog encounter, she was pretty skiddish and scared and it started getting worse. I wondered if she was picking up on my tension. So I've been going out of my way the last 2 months to help her get excited when we see doggies in the neighborhood or when we're at friends house with pets. I just don't want her to be afraid like I am. It worked like a charm. Now she's super excited whenever she sees a dog. In fact, it worked a little too good.
Anyway, I had always heard that a dog's mouth is very clean. So Sunday when she was with my in-laws and they were letting their giant North American Indian Dog lick her tiny face, I was okay with it. Same thing last night. My brother's dog was bathing her with kisses. A few times she tried to kiss him back with her mouth open. Yuck! But she was loving it.
Since I obviously know nothing about dogs, it got me wondering. Is that okay? I just asked my co-worker who is a dog fan and she said that it's a myth that dogs mouths are clean, which makes total sense. Is it okay to let her have an occasional bath of dog kisses?
DD just turned 1 yr.
Re: Babies and dogs?
We have multiple dogs and they have always given DS kisses! We try to limit the amount of kisses on the mouth but it happens. DS started trying to give kisses back at about the same age but at this point we've managed to teach him to avoid the mouth. He usually kisses the top of their head now.

This is the only concern in my house. Well, that and MIL's dog has been trained by BIL (16) that it is OK to lick INSIDE your mouth. Ew.
I'm guessing that if she gets super slobbery then you use some water to rinse her off/dry her off. As long as it is supervised play time and you know the dog is free of disease then its fine. My dog loves giving kisses. However, we are teaching him to not lick people in the face because he is a slobber machine.
