DH thinks we should use just an initial for a boy's MN, in our case it would be J. His dad's name is Jay and my dad and two brothers all share the MN John. This way we could honor all of them. I just think it's a little kooky to have just the initial though...but in all honesty on most forms and whatnot they just ask for a middle initial anyway. Thoughts?
Re: what do you think of having just an initial for MN?

This reminds me of the Simpsons. Homer is Homer J. Simpson and he never knew what the J stood for, turns out it stood for Jay.
I say just come up with a J name rather than just J

This. I have a friend who doesn't have a MN and a friend who doesn't have a first name, just an initial and they are always having to explain.
I know a few guys that only have middle initials... my father in law Mac D and my ex Jay B... I think it's ok for boys but not for girls and also nms... but go for it, you DH and DS will understand

I know a ladie with the middle name "I" because her initial spell her FN and her parents didn't like any "I" names...

It was a tradition in their family
This!
In my family it's considered bad luck to name a child after someone living, so instead of giving him my grandfather's name as a mn, she just went with the inital since she didn't like any other names that started with the inital.
Most of the timeonly the middle name inital is used, if it is used at all, so I really don't see how anyone will know the difference.
Even on forms, you are usually only asked for a middle inital.
I also only have the middle initial K and I don't feel slighted or think that it is weird. I kind of like it. I defnitely like it better than having a common middle name like Ann or Lynn. My dad always told me that it stood for Special K when I was little, althought I know it was really after my grandma.
