NTR: Anyone a hair colorist?

As you can see from my siggy---I've gone just too darn blond and my secret is getting out (see the roots LOL).  Well, it's getting to be too much for upkeep---between cost and time (takes about 2+ hrs at the salon for that and a haircut).

BUT when I've mentioned to my colorist that I want lowlights she says my hair is so processed that it'll take a long time to get it to be dark and it'll fade, etc.  It's not that she won't do it--I think it's that she just doesn't know if I'll like the final result in a few weeks.

What would you recommend?  I've gone all dark before and it looks bad---I like being blond but it's just too much.  Would a darker shade of blond all over be better?  My hair picks up RED so badly---a cross between my body and our crappy water.  So it's constantly orangey/brassy.  Any tips????

I'd love to have a dark blond with light blond highlights ideally--like a jennifer anniston type look.

  • I'm not a professional but that surprises me that she said it'll take a long time to get dark and it'll fade.  I've been highlighting my hair all over blonde for about 10 years now and when it's too blonde for me she just throws in some lowlights and I'm good to go.

I mean you'll still need to get highlights if you want some blonde but you can go a lot longer in between since your hair won't be all over blonde.

  • I'm not a colorist, but I'll give you my advice anyway :)

I do think that you need to go a bit darker. What your stylist said is mostly true, but there are ways to combat the fading and it may take 2-3 visits until your final result is what you want (after fading etc).

You'd need to do a color fill, which adds pigments that you've lost by bleaching. Then you'd have to tone so it's not brassy or green. I think you'd look great with a level 6 warm brown with sort of caramel highlights (this would be similar to Jennifer Aniston). If you pull a lot of red when it gets colored, your stylist would have to aim for more of a neutral shade, and it will probably end up more warm anyway. If she adds red for warmth, your hair would probably end up a more auburn shade that what you'd want (though auburn would like nice, too!)

After the first time, the color will probably fade to a lighter shade within about 4 weeks. So, you just have to do it again (maybe up to 3 times) for the lighter pigments to "take" the darker color enough so that it doesnt continue to fade quite as much.

  • I'm not a professional, but I think a darker shade would look great on you. You can do the Jennifer Aniston color, which isn't really that dark at all. Just throw some highlights in, and it'll look great. I think if you just go with a dark color all over, it may be a total shock to you, and you won't like it. But if you throw some highlights in, it'll still be light, and you could go longer between touch ups.

Do you have well water? I used to have well water at our old house, and they have a shampoo to help with that. Its by Malibu, and you can get it at any professional supply store.

  • I agree with your colorist. You'll see results from the lowlights, but since your hair is so processed, they will fade, and quickly. What happens when you bleach your hair is ~ your hair shaft is opened and color is lifted out~therefore resulting in blonde. When you do that over time, your hair isn't going to hold color as well, so if you deposit color on hair that has been opened time and time again, It just isn't going to last. The only thing I can see you doing so you don't have maintenence like you do now is to let your root grow out and just start getting foils. That will give you the "jennifer aniston color". That's going to take A WHILE. Other than that, you are always going to have maintenence if you are chaging the base of your color(ie~touchup)

  • I teach beauty school......your colorist is right, lowlights would fade right out. I do think that right now you are TOO blond. What I would do is put a light brown/ dark blond on you. It will most definitly fade, however that will then give you some "natural" highlights that are lighter. I can tell that your hair picks up red, so I would be sure to use a natural shade on you to help cancel that out. I would use a demi-permanent color to save your hair some abuse, but be prepared to get it done again in about 2 months. After the 2nd time, it should hold better and last your much longer than the blond.
