Anyone want to play "What's Growing in my Compost"?

It's time for another rousing game of What's Been Growing in my Compost!

These are several individual plants not one long vine.

I'm kind of pulling for cantaloupe so I can dig it up and plant it!

  • Oh and yes, our compost is a repurposed recalled crib.

that's a brilliant use  for a recalled crib.

  • Are the leaves slightly fuzzy with little angry-ish hairs, bumpy, or smooth?

  • I'd say its either a melon or a squash.

Thanks! We kept debating what to do with all the pieces once we'd sent the hardware in. We were afraid that if we put it out at the curb for garbage pickup that someone would try to put it back together with random hardware and use it. It was actually dh's idea which is a bit shocking considering how he likes his yard!

Ok, leaves are not fuzzy but the stem is. There are two different leaves - the bottom two are oval shaped, thicker/ firmer and more smooth. The top leaf is shaped like a spade and when I touched it, was sort of crinkly like tissue paper.

  • If it were going to be a butternut squash invasion, all the leaves would be that sort of hairy/spiky on the top. It could be that the smaller ones are just new growth, but I'm not sure on that--we've had squash, strawberries, and some random shoots that never took (and none looked like the pictures or felt like your description), but never melon. So I hope you have a melon!

If/when you transplant it, do so at the beginning or end of the day--it's more likely to react violently and die that way than if you just grab a little spade and go to town mid-day :)

Now that is the best part for sure!  See...you are rubbing off on him and there is still hope.

Now...what's the hope that I need to find you a new crib for a new compost bin for your new place in MN? Wink

  • We too have a mystery plant (actually about 20) popping up from our compost pile. I pulled one up and suspect ours is a pumpkin. Looks similar to yours, but ours aren't as big as yours, just 2 inch sprouts. Report back when you solve the mystery!
