BF-ing every 4 hrs instead of 3

My LO was BF-ing every 2 1/2 - 3 hours.  She is 5 1/2 weeks old and just finished up a big growth spurt.  Now, it seems like she is wantingto go sometimes up to 4 hours between feedings during the day.

Should I be trying to get her to eat more often or let her stretch it out to 4 hours??

She does okay at night for her age I think... eats at 9pm, wakes at 1am and again at 5am to nurse.  Of course I wish she was sleeping through that 1am one, but it's okay.  If she stretches out the daytime feedings will she be more hungry at night and wake up more-- I don't want that.

Re: BF-ing every 4 hrs instead of 3

  • I'm probably not much help because my DS was a month early so I think it has been different for us.  But at 4 weeks, my pediatrician is just now letting us wake him every 4 hours/night rather than every 3, and to do that, he wants us feeding him every 2-3 hours/day even if it means waking him for it.

  • With both of our kids, once they were back up to/over their birth weights, our pedi told us to just feed them when they are hungry, and not to wake them to eat.
