I try to read every post on starting solids, since I know we're heading that way soon... and it seems that the argument is that oatmeal is better than rice cereal because rice cereal constipates. Is that accurate? Also, forgive me for being this stupid, but there is specific "baby" oatmeal, right? Or are we talking about regular oatmeal?
Re: So oatmeal is better than cereal?
According to our Doc you are correct...we started oatmeal (the baby kind) last Monday and haven't had any problems. Max is breastfed and was only pooping maybe once a day but usually once every other day. Since starting oatmeal his poops are very predictable...he has been pooping at 6:30am every morning!
They do make oatmeal specifically for babies, it's in the same aisle as rice cereal and is pretty much the same consistency.
Yeah there is infant oatmeal. I was confused too! Especially if you ask old people they will tell you crazy stuff they fed their kids
Our pedi told us to start rice first and then if it constipates too badly then try oatmeal. He didn't like either (I think because he just wasn't ready). It didn't seem to have any effect on his pooping (he is the poop machine) but maybe that is because he really didn't have much of it at all.
GL!
This is totally one of my problems!!! LOL
We started with veggies, and then introduced oatmeal. We've never given rice. I don't buy the baby oatmeal, I just get regular whole rolled oats and throw a couple cups in the food processor for 30 seconds. It chops them into little pieces and makes it smoother to mix and eat. 3 cups will last us about a month. I just made some this weekend and only pulsed it in the processor for 10-15 seconds, since DD's starting to like food thicker. HTH.
