Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Comfortable baby carrier for older baby?

I've been using the baby bjorn and love it. Our lo LOVES being carried facing forward/out.  The problem is that she is getting a bit heavy and it is starting to take a toll on my shoulders, so I'm looking for something that will

- be more comfortable with a heavier baby

- hold a baby more than 25 pounds (she's not there yet at all...but if I buy something new, I'd like to use it for a while!)

TIA!

Re: Comfortable baby carrier for older baby?

  • I'm not sure about outward facing, but here's my experience:

-We had a Bjorn when DD was little.  i didn't know it was bad for her hips, but when I found out, we got rid of it.

-We went through several pouch slings (Balboa, etc), and DD hated them (around 4 months)

-We got an Ergo.  LOVE it. It's great for older babies.  She can't face out, but you can do a back carry, hip carry, and a front (inward facing) carry.

-We have a Maya ring sling.  LOVE it.  Not sure how great it is for older babies, but for DD right now (and supposedly from the newborn stage), it's fantastic.  There are a whole ton of different carries and she can face outward if she wants (she prefers a hip carry right now).

We've had a few others here and there, but those were the ones that stood out.

ETA:  Aside from the front carry position, I think the Ergo is your best bet.  It puts all the weight on your hips, and is super comfortable.

  • It's bad for their hips? I hadn't heard that...can you elaborate?

The Bjorn keeps the baby suspended from their crotch, so it can be harmful in the development of their hips.

The other carriers I mentioned, though, put the baby's butt in a little pouch so they are actually "sitting" more comfortably.

You could ask the AP board, they have a lot of very experienced baby wearers there.  I'm sort of an amateur.   :)

There's a newer version of the Bjorn that supposedly doesn't do that.  I don't have experience with it, though.

  • Facing foward will never feel good on your back with a heavy baby, doesnt matter the carrier.

A good subsitution though is a high back carry (they can see over your shoulder) and you can do this with the mei tei or kokopax - I have both and love them both.  You can also do this with a woven wrap.

another substituion is a hip carry.  Its much easier on your back and your baby still gets a good range of view.  You can do this with a mei tei, ergo, ring sling or wrap.  I have the ergo and i like it.

  • I have a Scootababy and really like it.
  • I have the Lillebaby Wearever and love it. It converts to baby facing you, baby facing out, hip carry, and back carry. It also distributes the weight on your hips and back and is very portable. https://www.amazon.com/Lillebaby-Everywear-Convertible-Child-Carrier/dp/B001J4UULK/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1274023513&sr=1-6
