1st Trimester

first u/s at 19-22 weeks

Is this normal? I was just reading my OB's website and that makes me a little sad to wait that long. Do they listen for the heartbeat before that?

Re: first u/s at 19-22 weeks

  • That's standard.  Some women get an NT Scan at 12 weeks, but if you aren't high risk it's usually optional.

I only had one u/s (@ 20 weeks) during my first pregnancy.

  • yeah sounds right to me.  You can do an NT scan at about 12 weeks if offered.  I got an early u/s just bc my cycle was so messed up we had no clue when i would be due.  But as PP said unless you are high risk they usually wait for the anatomy scan.

  • Totally normal!  You will get to hear the heartbeat every appointment with a doppler starting around 10 weeks (though don't freak if they don't find it then.  That's still a little early).

  • Thank you ladies! I think I was misunderstanding my OB's website. The way it sounded on the website was that you won't even hear the heartbeat, but I just was informed that they will listen to the heart beat w/o an u/s (clearly I have no clue what goes on at these things)

Thanks for answering my newb questions!

  • As pp...totally normal. I had a dating u/s at 9 weeks since the doctor wanted to know exactly when I conceived, since my cycle is irregular. I knew of course within a few days, but I wasn't turning down the opportunity to see my LO!

  • Umm I have had an ultrasound at every appointment, I thought it was standard protocol !
  • It really depends on your OB's practices, and your insurance.  Some insurance companies will not pay for an early u/s unless medically necessary.  However, first trimester u/s are NOT only as a result of a high risk pregnancy or a history of loss.  They are used for dating purposes generally.  If your insurance covers it, chances are, you will get one unless you OB is against it.

Your OB WILL listen for the h/b before 20 weeks.  Some will start as early as 10 weeks, but many will not.  With DS, my OB would not even attempt it until 14 weeks because she said that it was hit and miss before that.  There is no reason to freak a pregnant woman out if you can't find it earlier.

  • I had an ultrasound at my first appointment earlier this week at 8 weeks...standard for my office!

  • B/c of my IVF, i've already had 5 u/s. 3 with my RE And 2 with my OB. I kind of got the impression that I migh get one with my OB with every visit... And I'm seeing perinatal for my 12 week NT and 20 week anatomy.

depending on my fibroid and some other issues, I think I might wind up seeing perinatal more often.

  • I had an ultrasound yesterday (9 weeks) and will have one again at about 16 weeks and then again at 20 weeks.  My ob said that "we would find a reason to need one" :)

  • Not standard from the people I know around here.  My office and others in this area do one around 8-10 weeks.  You can't tell the sex or anything, but you see the heart beat and the baby pretty much looks like a little peanut.

  • I was given an u/s at 9 weeks strictly for dating. I had no idea how far along I was so they did it just to find out. Lucky for me I got to see my little one's heart beating. I don't get my next one until nearly 20 weeks as well for the gender. So yes, it is normal unless you are a high risk patient.
  • I have gotten earlier ones with both my pregnancies because NT scans are common (though not required) around here. With my first I got one at 6.5 weeks because I was bleeding, 9 weeks to date it (because of a discrepancy on the previous one), 12 weeks for the NT scan, 20 weeks for the standard anatomy scan, and 21 weeks to look at his heart because of something on the 20 week scan.

With this one I had one at 7.5 weeks to check for a heartbeat and date it because I lost one the month before I got PG this time and I had an NT scan at 12 weeks.

  • Yep, I only get one u/s at that time as well.
