Usually the hospital that you plan on delivering offers classes/tours/etc.  I'd check with them (or your Dr.) and see what they have to say.

For what it's worth, we went to the classes and I found them overpriced and for the most part, uninformative.  I really think I could have gotten the same information out of a few videos at the library.  Just my personal opinion though, so good luck to you!

  • We just finished our Bradley classes and highly recommend them!  Although I am interested in natural/no medical interventions, so if that's what you're looking for -- check it out.

  • What Ritzy19 said.  We signed up through the hospital we are delivering at.  My doc also offers classes in the office, but we haven't gone to them yet.

  • I took classes through my old OB office.  Absolutely terrible and I would recommend avoiding most classes offered by hospitals unless you really want to focus on epidurals, narcotics, and c-sections.  Hospital and doctor-offered classes really don't focus on natural birth.   I'm sure that there is a good class offered by a hospital out there somewhere, but I haven't heard about it yet!

A few places that you may want to check out:
For a 12-week Bradley Class in your area (as recommended above)

Lamaze Family Center in Ann Arbor

Center for the Childbearing Year in Ann Arbor

Heartfelt Hypnosis in Birmingham.  This is for hypnobirthing.

You can check your library for birthing videos too.  Also, I don't believe there are any people offering Hypnobabies in the area, but you could do the Hypnobabies home study course.  This is what I'm planning to do this time.

  • Like the other people said, you can do them anywhere. We're delivering at HFWB, but I'm doing the classes through Beaumont because they had much more convenient times and locations. Their childbirth classes are 4 weeks long, once a week for about 3 hours. They also recommend that you finish the classes at least one month before your due date.

I really hate when people make blanket statements that all doctors and hospitals are only focus on c/s, epidurals and other interventions.  I really think hospitals are making a huge effort to listen to what the mother wants and proceeding with care accordingly.

    Also, Beaumont offers hypnobirthing classes

I didn't actually.  I said "I'm sure that there is a good class offered by a hospital out there somewhere, but I haven't heard about it yet!"  If I knew of one, I'd recommend it :)
