sooo if a Dr says "Vacuum or C-section"

what do you do?

i know, obviously, a vacuum is something i would not be leaning towards.. but are there serious risks with it?  risks that would makea c-section a better option (if it came to MUST doing one or the other?)

Re: sooo if a Dr says "Vacuum or C-section"

  • I think I would certainly go with vacuum and try that first.

  • That's a good question.  I have no idea what the hell I'd want to do if put in that situation.  I'm going to guess I'd say c-section as I imagine it may be easier on the baby, but there are always risks with that as well and that means more downtime for me as a new mom.

    Tough decision for sure.

  • I'm gonna have to go with a section on this one...

  • i would have a c-section

my reasoning stems from my friend's baby who got stuck.  They tried to use a vacuum (and forceps too) and ended up crushing the baby's skull.  She was in the NICU for a couple of months.  She is okay now, but is partially deaf.

    ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Hhhhmmm, good question. I've heard that the vacuum sounds much worse than it actually is, but assuming it needs to be used because the baby is in distress, I would want her out ASAP. I've seen too many instances of traumatic brain issues due to mom wanting to avoid medical intervention. ?What if the vacuum didn't work and precious time was wasted? ?I'm leaning towards C-section. ?
  • It really depends on how far down your baby already is... I refused a csection after I had been pushing for almost 4 hours. My doctor really pushed the vacuum over the csection because I was literally so close, they were just worried about fetal distress.  He said at the point I was most of the risks associated with the vacuum would not be an issue in my situation.

  • C-section for sure.  I have seen babies at work that gotten the vacuum and/or forceps used on them.  Absolutely not.  I really don't even want an internal monitor used on them unless absolutely necessary.  Ouch.
  • It would depend on the circumstances...DS was born using the vacuum, but he was really close, just turned sideways so every time I stopped pushing, he went back up.  The doctor could tell there was plenty of room, she just needed to use it to help keep him from going back.  And his heart rate had dropped so he had to come out immediately.  I think that in that case, it was better to have the vacuum and have him out right away than take the time it would have taken for a c-section.  He had a pretty good conehead, but it went away within a few hours.  My recovery sucked, but I'd still take it over a c-section.  If it were forceps or c-section, I'd take the c-section.

whoah!  I'd have to do some research but I'd lean toward c-section esp in light of stories like this.

  • Definitely C/S. I know a baby whose head calcified in the conehead shape. C/S seems lower risk to me.
  • Does the doctor give these options to you while your in labor? Or, do they decide on their own which option they think is better for you?

The previous post about the lil baby's skull being crushed has just scared the helll out of me.
