So I am starting to think about making that move and introducing a cup of some sort to DD with water but what is better IYO and why? I've heard straws are better for speech development but I've heard of people using shot glass sized cups and skipping the whole lid and cup idea. I also had a friend tell me she introduced straw at 6 months and by 10 months her DD did not want to nurse because she got liquid faster from a cup.
So what do you think and why?
FWIW DD is breast fed when with me and bottles with DH and Grandma. Thanks for talking cups with me!

DS is BF and we started with sippy cups at around 5-6 months. He picked it up right away and a couple months later we offered a regular straw inside a bottled water and he made it work again! We also offered a regular cup but he's a little sloppier with it so we only do sips. I find that it's best to do a sippy cup for EBM while DS is at MIL's, that way there's less waste. BTW, he does not prefer the sippy over the breast.
Oh, and DS was EBF through 4.5 mos and then started getting bottles when I returned to work. (born free glass bottles w/ flow 1 nipples - he's still on flow 1 nipples)
The spout sippys aren't good for oral and speech development. That said, pacifiers aren't great either but I'm sure everyone and their aunt will tell you about a kid who used spout sippys and/or pacifers until they were 10 and turned out just fine
Do a little research, I'm sure you could google some info easily.
Cups are best for development. Straw sippys or straw shaped sippys are best if you need a top. We did cups then straws for DS, blogged about it here, https://bajohnsonfamily.wordpress.com/2009/09/22/bottles-cups-sippies-and-straw-sippies-oh-my/.
Oh, and we are still nursing at 21 months no problem and he's been drinking out of a cup since 6 months. My guess is that there is more to the story with your friend, I know so many people who said that their kid stopped nursing because bottles flowed faster etc and most likely it was a nursing strike (which is very common) that they could have pushed through with a little persistence. DS stopped nursing at about 14 months and I thought we were done. I got some great advice that it was probably a nursing strike and treat it as such and lo and behold it was - he started nursing again and has been nursing for another 7 months so far.
My LO refused to take a bottle so we've been cup feeding instead since she was about 2 months old. She's BF'd but takes a cup 1-2x day when I am at work. Her "cup" right now is the cap to all of those bottles she won't use. It's basically the size of a shot glass. My DH likes the caps because they're somewhat flexible and he can squeeze it into a little spout for her, if need be.
Now that she's nearly 4 months old she's gotten really good at cup feeding. We just bought a sippy cup with handles (since she's really "handsy" these days) and she liked being able to hold on and "help" but she didn't like the spout on the cup. So I am now on the hunt for a cup with handles and no top. They seem hard to find though. I am not a fan of letting a kid walk around with a cup anyway, so we'll just go to regular, open cups when she's a little older. For travel, etc. we'll probably just teach her to sip from a water bottle or one of those cups that have flexistraws.
