infant rescue swimming

I am seriously considering signing up my son for infant rescue swimming lessons.  However, I just got some of the paperwork, and it seems pretty intensive.  i.e. you have to monitor the childs food, sleep, bowel movements everyday while the child is in lessons.  You are not supposed to "practice" with your child, or otherwise go swimming with them.  I've also heard that its quite a struggle in the beginning, that its tough for parents to see their child struggling in the water.  I think it's probably worth it to teach him the skills he needs in the water, but I just don't know.

Anyone doing these lessons?  Thoughts?

Re: infant rescue swimming

  • I thought it was a neat idea until I saw a few videos that showed infants struggling in the water and I couldn't take it.

We don't have a pool so I'm not terribly concerned about her having access to water at this point.

I would like to start her in regular swimming lessons soon though since she loves the water.

  • that just seems crazy to me.  we currently have ds in swimming lessons and they teach them how to turn to the edge of the pool and grab on if they fall in, but i am holding on to him.  the teacher will also hold him and then put him under and then let go and he will swim to me, but i would never be able to sit there and watch him struggle.  no way.
  • li'l i began her third week of ISR lessons on monday. when i first read the paperwork, i thought the same thing. but it really isn't that intense. the BUDS sheet is not as bad as it seems, and it's actually kind of a cool way to monitor your LO's patterns over a few weeks.

i admit that my LO is kind of unusual in that she loooooves the water, so i don't have to hear her cry (unless it's cold, which it only has been one day) like some other moms. but to me, these survival strategies are totally worth it. you have no idea how many children drown in their bathtubs or in puddles... it isn't just about pools. this teaches them to get their faces out of the water, and to float. regular swmming lessons teach, well, swimming. they may incorporate some of the ISR strategies, but it isn't the main focus.

i wholeheartedly recommend the lessons. even just over three weeks, i am amazed at how much she's learned. she did a full float just this morning. :)
