Car seat base question...

We have the Chicco Keyfit with a base in each car. Our appt to get the seats inspected were for the Tuesday after  DD ended up making her appearance so clearly we didn't make it and things got crazy after that.

We installed the base in my car using the LATCH system in the middle of the back seat. I read on a friend's blog today that when they got their same seat inspected they were told to only use the LATCH system when installing behind the driver or passenger seat and to use the shoulder strap when installing in the middle. Anyone else hear this? How did you install your base?

Re: Car seat base question...

  • Read your car manual, that's the only way to know if LATCH is safe in the middle.  In our car and also my mom's car, LATCH is not available in the middle, so we're using the lap and shoulder belt in both of our cars.

  • In DH's car, we do seatbelt in the middle (we also "borrow" the latch from the sides, but since that is technically not correct, we use the seatbelt, too).  In my car, we have him behind the passenger seat with the latch.

Agree with pp - definitely check out your car manual.  Most cars are not designed to have the latch in the middle or "borrow" from the sides - but some are safe that way.

We have the base installed with the latch system in the middle.  Our car (Acura MDX) has latch anchors for all three seats.

Ours does do and so did hers but the "inspector" told her you're not supposed to use it. Just seeing if anyone else heard that.

Never heard that.  Makes no sense, why would the latch system be in all three seats if it weren't safe for the middle?  I think the inspector is probably confused and thinking that the seat is sharing the passenger seat latches.

  • We had the same carseat as you do for our DD when she was an infant. We also had it inspected. The man helping me with the installation never told me this and installed it in the middle position. Our SUV has LATCH system for all three seats as well.

Correct carseat installation is something I am very anal about. I read and researched everything on this. Look in your user manual for your vehicle, it should clearly state where the best position for the carseat should be specific to your make/model.

  • According to the manual in our car we can only put the latch infant seats behind the passenger or driver - not in the middle.  However, that changes for the convertible seat...but I think that might only be for forward facing also.

Check the manual in your car, not the one that came with the car seat.  Some cars are different.
