Baby Names

Liesel

I love German names and have wanted to use this for a little girl for a while. It seems, however, that people either love or hate this name. I know several people who think it's great and a lot more who can't stand it.

Somebody will hate any name so it's not necessarily a deal-breaker but for those who don't like the name Liesel [or Liesl, etc.] could you explain why? I already know about the weasel/ diesel thing but those aren't a big deal- I am looking for any other reasons I may not have thought about yet. I don't want to give my child a name without considering all the pros and cons.

Even if you do like it, do you think it is so unusual here that most people won't recognize it as a real name? I'm sure not everyone has heard it or seen The Sound of Music.

Thanks!

  • I think most people realize it is a real name. I like it, but I'm also a big fan of the Sound of Music.

It also reminds of a camper I had many summers ago w/ the name. She was kind of a whiner, but very sweet. But I don't usually associate names with personalities unless I've known 10 that are b!tchy or something :).

I personally love it, but I think sometimes people believe that unless you just got off the plane from Bavaria, you shouldn't be allowed to use German names (why they don't feel this way about Gaelic I'll never know). So you probably get "that's weird" and stuff. I think it's great, and I love the Sound of Music connection.
  • I guess it's the German form of Lisa....how is it pronounced? Ly-suhl or Lee-suhl?

At first I saw the word, lie in it and it did make me think of diesel, but I'm not up on my German, and I've only seen Sound of Music once.

it is a form of elisabeth/ elizabeth. it is pronounced lee-sull or lee-zul. i would pronounce it more like an S but the other way doesn't bother me. i just wonder if most people who haven't seen the movie won't know the name.

  • I think it's beautiful. I am trying to think of negatives and the only thing I can think of is how it may flow with certain last names because of the "sel" sound at the end.

We had a cute waitress for mother's day wait on our table named Liesel.

Well if you had a little Liesel, then there would be at least one I'd know. :)

  • I really dislike it. I was born in Germany and I've never really liked this name, it just doesn't sound very pretty or feminine to me.
  • I love Liesel! It's on my maybe list. I don't think I could use it because it's very different from other names we love. (And, since we plan on more than one LO, I don't want one to have a "Will, Jane, and Nevaeh" situation where one stands out as a very different type of name. FWIW, those aren't names we are considering. They just popped into my head.)

Yes, I do think of the Sound of Music. But I love musicals. And it is a beautiful name.

  • The only problem I have with it, is that's it's a nickname of a nickname.  But only a German nerd such as myself would know that, so don't let that stop you!
  • my ex husband's cousin was named this. perfectly nice girl, but i never liked her name.  honestly, in my totally judgmental opinion, this girl was homeschooled and when I met her, seemed socially awkward and the name to me just kind of fit--a weird little girl who didn't really fit in with the rest of the area she lived.

(and FWIW I very well may homeschool, so that's not meant to be a knock on homeschooling.)

and I have no basis for that feeling, it was just the impression of her.  And her family was totally nice, too.  (Ex-husband's family on that side disowned him after the divorce for what he pulled.  So it's not a slam on the fact that she's related to my ex.  She's sweet.)

  • Liesel it's different. I think it's pretty. However, it reminds me of Lysol or a Sisal rug.

Of course its a real name, some people seem to think it is isn't of English or American origination it is not "real"    I think its very pretty and as for the weasel remarks etc I think that kids will be kids and tease regardless of the name.

Same. And I think it's a pretty name-I knew a Liesel growing up and the only person who ever called her weasel was her older brother.

  • I always read this name as Diesel at first glance, and I cringe when I hear it. It doesn't sound particularly pretty or feminine. I imagine an awkward unattractive girl and think sleaze-el or weasel.

  • I love all the names from The Sound of Music, and think Liesel is beautiful.  I think most people know it's a name because of the movie, but I think this could be a situation where the familiarity with the name might fade over time as the younger generations stop watching the movie (which, sadly, is bound to happen).  As she grows up, her peers might have no clue where the name comes from or how to pronounce it.

Still, I wouldn't let that deter you from using it.  It's really a beautiful and unique name.

Be prepared for people to constantly ask you if she was named after the movie, though :)
