How bad is stress on the baby?

I have been over-stressed at work lately, to the point where I have atleast one mental break down a week. I get so overwhelmed and just start crying. Work is too demanding for me and I am worried it will have a physical effect on my body or worse, on the baby. Any insight on this?

Thanks!

  • I don't know the exact effects of stress on the baby, but I've had several friends tell me to calm down b/c it's not good for the baby.  Just try to take deep breaths when you can and get out of stress mode as quickly as you can.  I have a very stressful job as well and I try not to let it affect me for too long.  GL!

  • yoga? massage?  i would try to force yourself to relax.  I think pregnant bodies can handle much more than we think ... even stress .    but i would still try to be careful and take some real time to yoursel.
  • I agree with pp..  you should definitely try to calm down when you are feeling stressed out!  I had a stressful job and decided it wasn't worth my health or the health of my baby..  Not say it's the same situation but just learn how to distress GL
  • I heard stress has the same affect on the baby as caffeine.
  • I know it can't be good... I noticed when I'm at work on a busy day and have a million things to do and my stomach gets "in knots", the baby starts kicking like crazy. Then I feel bad that me being stressed is making him wiggle around too much. So I just try to calm down and take a breather a few times a day.
  • I think our babies can tolerate the stress we go through much better than we can. If you think of it, there are women who unfortunately have had to endure death and breakups during their pg; imagine that kind of stress!

I've had several...SEVERAL nervous breakdown moments during this pg. I have to snap myself out of it and realize it's only a temporary feeling and will pass. Plus it makes me look like complete sh!t! Not good on my beginning-wrinkly face!

Hang in there! Take a walk, a warm bath...go shopping!

  • Thanks girls. I know what a pp said about the stomach issue. When I have a stressful day, my stomach hurts so bad. Not like a stomach ache- but more like burning and a feeling like I cannot even eat! ARG!
  • My baby has been in Children's Hospital due to Meconium Aspiration for the past 2 months....She had distress in the womb a day before she was born, made a bowel movement and swallowed it. It got in her lungs and she's been in NICU from the time she was born until 2:30 pm today where she moved to the Special Care Unit at Children's Hospital...

I'm not sure if it was because I was stressing, or if it was because of something else!? .. Juts try and stay calm and level headed!

  • I think you'll be fine, it's not ideal obviously but I wouldn't worry about it. Exactly one week before I was born my dad's mom passed away in one hospital and my mom's mom was in another hospital having cancer surgery. Mom said she was so worried about me and the effect all that would have on me and I was healthy and fine.
  • DD had meconium asp. as well...and I was not stressed out at all in the days/weeks leading up to her delivery. Just another scenario to not scare you!
