When was your LO's first word?

DH swears he heard DS say "mama" yesterday. He was crying because I wasn't here and in the middle of crying said "mama." He usually doesn't babble when crying so... maybe he was crying for me?

Then today he was really fussy when trying to go down for a nap so we gave him a few minutes to see if we settled. When he didn't settle, DH went to check on him and swears he heard DS say "poo" and sure enough, he had pooed after we put him down! Another coincidence?

What do you think?

He is 8.5 months old actual, but only 6.5 months adjusted. Pretty young, I think, for words, but DH insists, lol  :)

Re: When was your LO's first word?

  • I still don't count any of our boys babbling as their "first word."  They both babble "nana," "dada," and "mama," but because I'm an SLP I know they are just babbling.  They don't really call me "mama" yet.  Joey does consistently say "woowoo" for a train though (c:  I do think your LO is pretty young for first words.  Typical development is 1-4 words around 12 months (adjusted).

  • DS was a 24 weeker and his first word was "clap" at 12 months adjusted (15.5 months actual).

Funny story...I left him at the house with my MIL and went to the hospital to have DD (scheduled c-section). I left at 9 AM and had her at 2:53 PM. MIL was there with DS by 6 PM and he was clapping, saying "clap" and waving. He did none of these things when I left the house at 9 AM.

  • ds #1 said dog at about 9 months actual and ds#2 said mama (and actually meant mama) at about 10 months actual.

LOL! I guess he knew it was time to be a big brother and do big kid things!
