1st Trimester

NT scan results :( (long)

After 12 weeks of an uneventful pregnancy we received some devastating news.  We attended what we thought would be a routine NT scan and were so excited to see our baby.  After hearing a strong heartbeat and watching our baby kick and move the news to follow was hard to accept.  After several attempts to get a good reading the sonographer seemed concerned.  I asked how everything looked and he said, ?not good?.  He abruptly left the room where we sat for what felt like hours and were soon greeted by the Doctor.  He told us that our baby has a high chance of having severe chromosomal abnormalities.  He saw two areas of concern; the brain, and a fluid filled sac behind the neck.  The diagnosis was cystic hygroma and holoprosencephaly . Both are signs of Trisomy 13 and lead to severe birth defects and an early death.  After feeling like this must be a bad dream he then said he strongly suggests we terminate the pregnancy.  At this point we were overwhelmed with sadness, anger, and guilt.  Immediately feeling like we did something wrong.  We were reassured that we did nothing wrong nor could we have done anything to prevent this.  It was a fluke of nature.  After an emotional morning followed by further testing in the afternoon it breaks our hearts have to say goodbye to our little one.

    I am so, incredibly sorry.

I had the exact same thing happen to our first baby, discovered at 12 weeks at the NT scan, and we also decided not to go forward with the pregnancy. You did NOTHING wrong, NOTHING that could have caused this to happen. I know you feel hopless and lost right now, and it is so unfair that this has happened.

Please feel free to PM me if you need to talk or vent. Also, the MC/PL board is amazing, and TTCAL as well when you are ready.

Please take care of yourselves right now.

    :::Hugs:::

  • I'm sending thoughts and prayers your way. God Bless you and your family.

  • I am so sorry that you are experiencing this. You definitely did NOT do anything wrong. I was a cytogenetics tech for several years where we had to diagnose chromosomal ab through CVS and amnio. Trisomy anything is a fluke that happens when the cells are first dividing. You could not have caused this!

Did the Dr suggest getting a CVS to confirm? There are genetic counselors that you can use to talk you through this, if you think that it may help your coping.

  • I just want to say that I am so so sorry that you are going through this.  We also had an uneventful pg until I went into labor at 19 weeks and lost our twins.  The doctors also told me that these things just happen.  I know it is not what you want to hear from them and nothing anyone can say or do will make this okay right now.  ((big hugs))

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.   I am now a HUGE advocate of an NT scan.  I couldn't imagine losing the baby further in the pregnancy or soon after giving birth.  We will get through this.

This process isn't over yet.  I did have a CVS and results will be in Monday but the doctor was convinced of the results.  I will have the procedure later in the week.  It's so hard going through each day still pregnant knowing how it's going to end.

  • I'm very sorry to hear that.  This sounds like exactly what happened to us.  The "fluid filled sac" is probably a cystic hygroma.  Did you have CVS testing done?  We were told the same things as you, but were NOT told to terminate.  My baby had measurements of 5.4mm due to the hygroma (or fluid filled sac).  I had the CVS and it turns out my little girl has NO chromosomal abnormalities.  There is a 50-60% chance the baby has chromosomal abnormalites and 30% chance a congenital defect that is the cause for the hygroma.  If you have CVS they can tell you if it is chromosomal.  I'm am not trying to tell you what to do, but that is not right for your doctor to tell you to terminate when there may be no reason to.  I had my test done at 12 weeks and now 2 weeks later, my baby girl is still here with perfectly normal chromosomes.  We go on the 20th to look for congenital defects, but because it is not chromosomal there is a HUGE chance the hygroma will resolve and she will be perfectly normal.  Please speak with your doc and has the testing done before making any decisions.  If you need to talk more about this, please PM me and I can give you my email and we can talk more.  T&P and big hugs.  I know how hard this is.

ETA:  I also wanted to say that it is NOT your fault and there is nothing whatsoever you could have done to prevent it.  I know this does not make it better though.

  • My heart breaks to read this post. Words cannot express how sad I feel for you and your DH. I am impressed and moved by your courage and compassion for your LO - what you're going to do is an act of mercy and one of great selflessness and love. I will pray that your results of the CVS come back to show that perhaps it's not as awful as the u/s seems...and I will pray that you and your DH find strength through all of this. Please keep us posted. And please, beyond everything, take care of yourself!

  • Just an fyi, those tests can sometimes give a false positive. A friend was told her baby girl had an 80% chance of having chromosomal abnormalities.  Thank goodness she didn't terminate.  The baby was born a healthy, happy, baby girl  - with normal chromosomes! I wish you and your family the best of luck.

  • I am so so so sorry.  I understand this heartbreak all too well and know that it is easy to start wondering "why".  It is natural to want to place blame but you must know that you did NOTHING wrong.  Nothing could have been done to prevent this.

    Take care of yourself.

  • I am so sorry ::Hugs::
