Refusing bottles - need advice please

I know this question gets asked every other day, but DD absolutely will not drink milk from a sippy. I haven't been worried about it too much, and she's been taking 4 (4oz) bottles -- first thing in the morning, 11.30 pre-nap, 4.30 snack and bedtime. Last week she gave up the 4.30, which was great. I just incorporated the ounces into the other 3 bottles and gave her a yogurt or cheese stick at 4.30 for a snack instead.

This morning, she refused her first bottle (which she usually drinks while snuggling with us in bed) AND her 11.30 bottle pre-nap. I tried to offer her milk in a sippy at breakfast, and of course, she refused.

So -- what now!? How do I get her to drink milk? I know everyone says "go cold turkey" but then do I not offer her water in a sippy either (which she loves and drinks all the time)?

HELP, PLEASE!!

  • I don't know if you have see but Nuk makes a "sippy cup" top that will fit on their bottle so that is what we are using for his "night time drink"

We tried it last night & it worked great (so much smother then the day before with a hard spout)

I also did cold turkey & it worked great but I think it really depends on the kid

  • if she's refusting bottles, that's not a bad thing.  it's rec by most pedis for LOs to be off of them by 1 y/o anyway.  as far as her drinking milk, she'll come around.  it took my DD several wks to start drinking milk out of a sippy.  she loves it now.  it's frustrating for several reasons, i know, but it'll pass.  keep offering her yogurt, cheese and other high protein and calcium foods and she'll be alright.
  • There are a lot of kids who don't like milk or are allergic to it & have to use other sources.  Try some soy milk, plus the other suggestions by pp to get her dairy.  If she's refusing bottles, I wouldn't go back, so just keep offering and/or supplementing with other things.  My nephew never took to milk- he's 10 now and perfectly healthy.   Both of my kids were off bottles by age 1 and just drinking milk with meals, so it wasn't like they were drinking a ton.  Most of their nutrition at your DD's age should come from real food sources, rather than liquid so this is all good!
  • She'll be fine without any milk at all. She can get all the calcium she needs from yogurt, cheese and other foods, you just have to be more conscious of it. Good luck.
