3rd Trimester

Palpitations...Is anyone experiencing this?

Over the past few weeks I have been having heart palpitations, first time landing me in the ER for the most worthless 8 hours of my life. They said I had PVC's(Premature Ventricular Complexes) I then followed up with my PCP and OB. They seem to think it is something more. I have been referred to a cardiologist who I have an appt with tomorrow. I am kind of nervous and not really sure what to expect as I have never been to a cardiologist. I have had blood pressure issues that have been constantly monitored throughout my pregnancy and seem pretty regular for the past few months. (side note: I also had high blood pressure a few years ago but was able to regulate that on my own, it came back as soon as I got pregnant)

Anyways, I guess I just wanted to see if anyone else has had these sort of issues. Some of the nurses that I work with have me worried telling me that the dr is going to take me out of work and what not.

TIA

  • I've been having them too.  I'm also on meds for high blood pressure and have been the whole time.  My doctor said as long as they don't last long, then it's fairly normal.  I was also concerned because I would cough when I have them.  He said that's the body's way of slowing the heart down.  I wouldn't worry too much about seeing a cardiologist though.  Remember they are simply specialists, and they are the best to diagnose your condition.  Hopefully it will turn out to be something very minor.  Good luck!

  • my sister had this. She had to be watched BP wise but she was fine and delivered around her edd and the baby was healthy. Hang in there, i would be scared too, but apparently several women get them during pg.

  • I also have high bp, and take medications for it. I have had some palpatations. I think it is pretty normal during pregnancy. But...FWIW, I did get put on bedrest..not because of the palps, but because of the high bp.
  • I've had them with both pregnancies.  Sometimes it is hard to catch my breath and I will cough as well.  I have normal to low blood pressure.

It did not cause any problems with my first pregnancy and DS is perfectly healthy.  So far so good with this one too.  They seem to come in clusters for me and most often when I am resting, watching tv or reading.

Try not to stress, I'm sure your doctors will take excellent care of you.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I had frequent palpitations all through 1st and 2nd semester, not as much now. PVC's are common in all people, especially when you're stressed, have had too much caffeine, or not enough sleep. However, if you have heart problems or hypertension AND have PVC's they may want to monitor you more closely. In all honesty though if you're a young healthy woman, I'd not worry about the PVC's very much. I'd worry more about the hypertension. Good luck.
