Meat, fish, poultry, and shellfish are the best sources of iron. Whole grains and enriched/fortified breads/cereals are good sources. Dried beans, like chickpeas, navy beans, or lima beans are also good sources and can be added to soups, salads, wraps. Spinach and potatoes are also good sources. Also consuming meat/fish/poultry enhances the absorption of a less well absorbed type of iron (nonheme) found in plant and animal foods.

Vitamin C-rich foods, like citrus fruits/100% citrus juices, sweet red or green bell peppers, cantaloupe, broccoli, and potatoes, also promote better iron absorption when eaten with nonheme iron sources.
