New pump making nipples so sore!

(also posted on BF board)

I had been using a friends pump but found a great deal for a Medella PISA for $100 so I bought it. I never had any soreness at all with 6 months of EBF. Not even initially. But man, this pump hurts! My nipples are dry & look like the are about to bleed. Is this normal?

I could  turn up my other pump (a Medella PIS) full speed/suction and I had no problems, but this one hurts! Thankfully, it does not hurt when I nurse DS. Could it be the breast shields are the wrong size? I am not really sure how to size those.

I appreciate any thoughts/ suggestions!

Re: New pump making nipples so sore!

  • I always found the more it hurt the more milk I got.  IDK if this is true for all women, but try to give your body a couple days to adjust.  If it still hurts or draws blood I'd go back to the other one if it does the job.  (I EP'd for 9 months, so I feel your pain....literally).

  • sounds like a problem with the breast shields.  You could purchase some larger sizes at Target or order them online.  Your best bet is to get fitted for the right size at a hospital or call an LC in your area.

It's not supposed to hurt.  Granted it's not like it feels good, but if it hurts then something isn't right.

It might be hurting b/c this pump is stronger and more efficient than your previous pump.  Make sure the shields are the right size first, but the PISA was an awesome pump and it maintained my supply while EPing for 9 months as well.

Use some lanolin or get an rx nipple cream from your doctor to get you through the discomfort as long as the shields are the right size.
